About this deal

But Doerr maintains a steady pulse that feels oddly familiar: whether from bedtime stories or something yet older is hard to tell.

This last story falls victim to the normally fastidious Doerr's weakness for overexplicitness: memory, we are told sternly and repeatedly, is a seed – "it is a village slated to be inundated". If you're like me, this book will cause you to reflect on what memories mean, what gives our lives meaning, and how a great story can leave an imprint on your heart. Istakao bih Dorovo divljenje prirodi kao ključno u skoro svakom njegovom delu (pa čak i u Svetlima). And if that seems impossibly lofty — these stories are very difficult to talk about without sounding grandiose or woolly-headed — it’s also winningly blunt. Ne mogu više da ovo istaknem, ali Dor stvarno savršeno piše, medjutim ova priča me iz nekog razloga nije toliko dotakla, uprkos prefinjenosti proze.

In 'The River Nemunas', a teenaged orphan moves from Kansas to Lithuania to live with her grandfather, and discovers a world in which myth becomes real. He is also the author of two story collections, Memory Wall and The Shell Collector ; the novel About Grace ; and the memoir Four Seasons in Rome . Our short time on earth means that we can achieve little in the grand scheme of things, yet we should at least be entitled to live a full and dignified life regardless. The "miniature, shrouded kingdom that has waited within her all along" replaces the fading everyday world.

I finished this story — uncertain —about how I felt and Luis Bunel’s words — were associated with my thoughts in regards to the first story. That Doerr weaves such outlandish material into a realistic, emotionally convincing tale is testament to his skill and control.I think: No matter what happens, no matter how wretched and gloomy everything can get, at least Mrs. The concept of going on a journey to obtain a large fortune at its conclusion mirrors that of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, and where intertextuality is concerned, one can draw parallels between the characters of Jim Hawkins and Luvo.

Esther, a young Jewish orphan in the Hamburg of the 30s, was the only one of her peers to escape the camps; throughout her life her epilepsy and extraordinary, visionary drawings have given her an apprehension of the world "folded inside" this one, and as death approaches, seizures reveal to her the lost girls from the orphanage waiting for her. These episodes, which naturally alarm her family, seem to her a kind of gift, an accidental mysticism that melts the distinctions between the past and the present, the present and the future, granting her access to at least a version of her fast-approaching afterlife: “Maybe not every disease is a deficit, a taking away. To say much more would be to try to summarize the stories themselves which I really don't want to do. The River Nemunas - postavlja neverovatno jednostavno, a suštinsko pitanje: šta je vera ako ne uspomena? Yet, one of the questions that came up during our discussion was whether the story and its themes would change if it were a white woman probing the memories of a black man.In the luminous and beautiful title story, a young boy in South Africa comes to possess an old woman's secret, a piece of the past with the power to redeem a life. I get the theme of memories, but I don't feel he's saying anything new that I didn't know before opening the book. Each deals with memory--what makes memories, what happens when we lose memories, what happens as we create them, do we pass them on to others, etc. These stories come from all over, from South Africa, Germany, Lithuania, China and several parts of the United States, and the local detail is always scrupulously and vividly rendered, but Doerr’s method in every one is to take us away from our usual lives and then slowly, insidiously, bring us back closer to home. Entre los relatos que menos me han gustado están, Procrear, generar y el que da el título al libro El muro de la memoria, este último tiene parte de ciencia ficción en su trama y me ha parecido bastante raro.
