Aguilar’s most famous photo-text work may be her incendiary four-photo series Don’t Tell Her Art Can’t Hurt (1993), which shows Aguilar brandishing a gun; as the pictures progress, she removes her clothing and sticks the barrel into her mouth and closes her eyes. It’s appalling and shocking to them that a female isn’t turned on by their manliness or that they wouldn’t succumb to their ‘magic stick.
In January 1992, Aguilar sent Martel another letter, written on glossy photo paper and illustrated with ghostly images of stone angels from her ongoing Cemeteries series (1990–96): “I felt like killing myself again Im anger cause what made me get out of this place was cause I had to fight again deg deep? Tortilleras on the Prairie: Latina Lesbians Writing the Midwest provides a unique look at a much-neglected component of Latina lesbian writing that of the Latinas living far from the East and West Coast hubs of both Latino and queer cultures, exploring Latina lesbian literary production in places like Kansas and Nebraska. I’m not caught up on LGBTQIA+ history before Stonewall and, despite seeing the photos from the 2019 Met Gala, still can’t explain what camp means. Wherever you are and whatever you want, there are thousands of potential dates, lovers, or friends on HER.She tries to deny it, pushing Eve away and doing everything she can to prove her straightness to her friends and the whole school. This book is a smorgasbord of poems, essays, diary entries, and other writings from Latina lesbians.
