About this deal

Please check the title of the book to determine if it should include any access cards, study guides, lab manuals, CDs, etc. At A2, the ‘tasks’ of prose unseen, verse unseen and prose comprehension have been separated out, and the prose passages drawn from a wider selection of authors than in the original edition. It is to be hoped that the forthcoming revision of Greek Beyond GCSE, the last of Taylor's course books to be revised, will be a proper revision in the full sense of the word. Short reading passages of AS standard in chapters 1-3 (most of adapted extracts from Latin authors) to illustrate new language material and to revise material already learned. Again as with Latin To GCSE, there is no assistance given with how to answer the types of questions that will be set in the language papers of the exams, except for translation into Latin, which very few candidates attempt.

The only one that came anywhere near this was Latin As Literature by Anthony Verity, long out of print and too advanced in any case for present-day Advanced students. I wonder if the standard of difficulty is a little uneven too - some of the AS Cicero passages seem to contain quite a few A-Level 'problems'. The Section B (Cicero) passages, divided into (i) lightly adapted passages (5) and (ii) shorter unadapted extracts (10), have only 5-7 lines of Latin. Classical Latin is more of a mosaic than a monolith, and interacting with, not discrete from, other varieties and registers. No explanation is given about how the lengthy (32 pages) section of reading passages (all prose) should be used.

I happen to be one of three quite elderly ladies working without a teacher and we are finding this book invaluable.

The standardisation of the language that resulted in Classical Latin covered a period of some 300 years. Comics Beyond the Page in Latin America demonstrates the importance of studying how comics circulate in all manner of ways beyond print media.

The six chapters are followed by a substantial reference section, which contains summaries of syntax, a reference grammar, seven useful brief appendices, an English to Latin vocabulary, a Latin to English vocabulary and an index . cover the whole gamut of syntax, beginning with the use of cases and tenses and ending with conditional clauses in indirect speech. Bringing together authors from across Latin America and beyond, and covering examples from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay, the book sets out a panoramic vision of Latin American comics, whether in terms of scholarly contribution, geographical diversity or interdisciplinary methodologies. The account of the tenses of the subjunctive used in indirect questions and their correlation with tenses of the indicative in the direct questions is unclear, incomplete and in places incorrect.
