About this deal

Without wishing to sound a Nelly Know All, the book didn't really tell me anything new, but people grappling with their own gender identity, or those with an interest but little knowledge, will probably find it interesting. Whether or not people go down the route of chemical or surgical procedures, and certainly for those people born before puberty blockers were able to help people who needed to transition not go through two separate puberties, it’s a hard path to walk that it’s unlikely anyone would walk if they didn’t absolutely need to.

Not only this, but the audiobook is actually narrated by the author herself and I love when the author narrates their own story as I think it really brings out the emotion. I think for me though, I've read numerous superior texts on gender, rights and psychology, so I feel as though the subject has already been covered for me. As her body gets in line with her mind, Juno tells not only her own story, but the story of everyone who is shaped by society’s expectations of gender – and what we can do about it. And two years ago, as Juno Dawson went to tell her mother she was (and actually, always had been) a woman, she started to realise just how wrong we’ve been getting it.

There were just a few instances where I thought the joke went a bit far and cut into the points she was making.

In 2017, Dawson published The Gender Games, her first book aimed at adults, discussing themes of gender as well as her own life experiences. However, Dawson did identify this way; but she is at pains to remind us that everyone’s journey is different and also that trendy or ‘sudden onset’ trans identity is a description invented by broadly anti-trans groups, but people can discover who they are at any age or life stage. As her body gets in line with her mind, Juno tells not only her own story, but the story of everyone who is shaped by society's expectations of gender - and what we can do about it. British Council complies with data protection law in the UK and laws in other countries that meet internationally accepted standards.

From little girls who think they can't be doctors to teenagers who come to expect street harassment. Dawson hangs the book around the story of her own life and her confusion about her own identity (in part reinforced by gender roles as defined by society and what people told her she should be like). Although she is a fearless champion of trans rights, she is sympathetic towards those who are less courageous, saying: “Look what happened to poor Lucy Meadows, who was a primary teacher like me.If you haven't watched so much TV, you are really not going to have a clue what they are talking about. I was particularly fascinated by her account of believing herself to be a gay man and the life she led (which is very frank) and she cleverly links her life back to gender and her own sense that something wasn’t right. For my fifth of my 20BooksofSummer I made a small substitution, staying on-list but promoting this one over “Black and British” because it’s also Pride Month, so I wanted to get this one reviewed by the end of the month. I always find autobiographical books difficult to review as I don't feel that I have the right to decide how good someone else's life is or has been so I always rate them based on how much I enjoyed the book and how thought provoking I found it and this was beyond thought provoking.

When I’m at the Hay book festival or at Yale, these teenagers come into my signing queues and they are scarred. After starring as the straight, male, American romantic lead in “an Edinburgh fringe disaster”, she decided that the life of a jobbing actor was not her bag either, so settled down to a career as a primary school teacher. Other contributors and celebrities featured include Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, John Legend, Jack Monroe, Caitlyn Jenner, RuPaul, Laura Dockrill, Conchita Wurst, Andrew McMillan and Emma Watson. Then again, I'm sensitive to this because a friend of mine is always the one to take a joke too far. Even Dawson’s memoir, The Gender Games (2017), her first aimed at adults, possesses ‘a breezy, confident style [that] can seem aimed at teenagers’ in the words of trans poet and scholar Steph Burt (‘Trans 101’, Times Literary Supplement. This would also be a good starting point if you know someone with a good sense of humor who wants to know more about trans people and trans experiences, or if you just want to read someone funny talking about gender and sexuality.
