I paint each colour in turn, letting it dry before applying the next so no two layers bleed together.

I painted the shadow on the underside by adding a hint of Payne’s Gray to the mix and then made tonal adjustments by adding extra layers of all colours. With my size 0 brush cleaned off, I used it with a base of Transparent Orange and variously added to it a little Scarlet Lake or a little Winsor Lemon to match the different shades of orange I could see in the frog’s feet and eyes. I used the size 000 brush and three mixes with a thick consistency: a dark blue of Quinacridone Purple, Payne’s Gray and Winsor Blue (Green Shade); a dark purple of Quinacridone Purple and Burnt Sienna; and a lighter blue of Cobalt Turquoise Light, Winsor Blue (Green Shade) and a touch of Payne’s Grey. I kept my mix really pale and used a combination of Permanent Sap Green and a touch of Payne’s Gray with lots of water. I began with the black areas, using the same combination of Payne’s Gray and Burnt Sienna as before, only much thicker this time. I left gaps wherever there were lighter colours and overlapped my paint on the transitions between colours. I applied a Payne’s Gray and Permanent Sap Green mix, adding Winsor Lemon where needed at a thicker consistency than the first layer.

The consistency of this mix was not only less thick compared to the darkest tone from the previous step, but also not as watery as the original lightest tone mix from step 5. I applied it with a size 1 brush and stippled the paint a little to recreate the rough texture of the frog’s skin.

When those dark tones were dry, I used a mix of Transparent Orange with a touch of Opera Rose, sometimes with some additional Winsor Lemon to paint the orange midtones. I began by using a less watery Scarlet Lake and Burnt Sienna mix with the 000 brush to paint the darkest orange tones. Having worked on each colour area separately, it was now time to step back and assess the painting as a whole.
