Czerniawski was a Polish patriot, but that phrase cannot do justice to his essential Polishness and the depths of his attachment to his motherland. It is a tribute to Macintyre's skill that the reader is haggard with anxiety as D-Day approaches – as, at any moment, one of these people could betray the great Anglo-American crusade. As Nazi coastal defences remained silent, and as there was no real plan to attack, the dummy spearhead had to turn sheepishly back to harbour.

The story is very interesting, but not exciting, meaning the author expects that the reader is interested in espionage stories and World War II stories, and the details chosen show that.In 2005 Malorie was honoured with the Eleanor Farjeon Award in recognition of her distinguished contribution to the world of children’s books. Gangs are endemic in poor urban areas but they also flouish in collapsing authoritarian societies and so are greatly apropos to Blackman's dystopian world.

Despite the huge scope of the story, this reads as a much tighter book than Macintyre's Operation Mincemeat. At times, the overlapping plots of deceit and deception that were employed against the Germans can be confusing, but overall the book comes together well as we head towards the story of the D-Day landings in 1944.
