Liquitex Crackle Paste can be used alone or mixed with acrylic colours to create a crackle texture on rigid painting surfaces. The size and extent of the crackle pattern is dependent on many factors, including the thickness of application, and the environmental conditions (temperature, relative humidity and air flow) during drying.

Apply Cracklè Step 1 Universal (sold separately) and let it dry 1-2 hours without forcing with hairdryer. The XL Crackle Paste is a structural paste for the production of cracks which appear as the paste dries. These cracks are deeper and wider the thicker you apply the XL Crackle Paste, a layer of up to 50 mm thick is possible.

Increasing film thickness will increase the tendency to crack and also the size of the cracks and platelets. the best results are achieved at temperatures around 18-25° C, with the drying process taking several hours. If you’re wanting to create a larger crackle effect, then apply a thin layer of PVA glue to your surface and wait at least 20-30 minutes before applying the crackle. The base/primer can be pigmented by adding acrylic paints, acrylic ink or resin pigments (no more than 20% addition by weight).If you apply a thick layer or apply it with a very heavy hand, your paste is less likely to crack because of the thick layer underneath, so be sure to use a flat taklon brush or a palette knife to allow the paste to be applied with an even, thin coating.

Watercolour isn’t really ideal for crackle paste as the paper that you’re using wouldn’t be strong enough to hold the thick paste. Allows for full control of crackle results based on thickness of application and application technique.
