About this deal

Meanwhile the island is alive with gossip about the strangers who have arrived from the mainland, armed with mysterious equipment which can reportedly steal a person's words and transmit them through thin air.

I was also unenthusiastic about the story’s heavy focus on the teenage characters, finding this gave the whole thing too much of a YA feel for my liking. not a bad thing at all, but if you are looking for The Secret History knockoffs like i always am, know that this is not the same kind of narrative arc. Not only a gripping, can't-stop-turning-pages thriller, but also a beautifully drawn portrait of grief and how we find our way back to life.

In this community, where suggestions quickly become fact, where gossip and hearsay can lead to terrible consequences, what can she do to stop a rumour once it has started? The tale's told primarily by Alex herself, recounting both what happened during the months she was teaching at the Unit and what's going on now, as she confronts hostile and friendly lawyers because of some initially unspecified disaster. I also had a hard time believing that Alex – merely 25 years old – had been a renowned theater director in London and that she was given the responsibility of challenged kids with no experience. However, I appreciated the 5 act structure (a subtle echo of Renaissance and Greek tragedy) and the depiction of grief was particularly moving. She takes the job cause she has nothing else, but it becomes important to her, as she realises how these kids are often kids whom society and their families and old schools have given up on: she can help them get back on track, find joy in learning and equip them for a better future. Finding them enthralled by tales of cruel fate and bloody revenge, she even begins to worry that they are taking her lessons to heart, and that a whole new tragedy is being performed, right in front of her. So when her friend Robert offers her a job in a new town away from the pain she is having living in London she takes the job. Some authors rooted their tales in folklore, history, magical realism (Churail, Fury, Spitfire, Tyger), while others weaved more recognisable narratives set in the present day (Harridan, Hussy, Vituperator), and several used imaginative vignettes of human interaction to present their reflections on connection, resilience, and women's experience of society throughout the ages (Wench, Dragon).Although Margaret Atwood as a contributor was certainly an alluring factor (and I did enjoy her story more than most), the name that led me to this collection was Claire Kohda, the author of one of my top favorite reads last year. In intimate character studies of her three subjects, Flock seeks to answer a question she had asked herself: Does fighting back lead to change? I liked figuring out, step by step, what happened and why, and while I really did like some aspects of the reveals - such as the person dying not being one of the group or anyone in the school as you might expect, but Katarina, the fiancee of the man who killed Luke. Fans of Donna Tartt's The Secret History (1992), Erin Kelly's The Poison Tree (2011), and Tana French's The Likeness (2008) will likely enjoy the new perspective Haynes' conversational style offers to similar material.

Alex never guessed teaching these kids about mythology would end in disaster, but the more consumed they become by these stories of revenge, love and fate they become, the closer they all hurtle towards violence. Spitfire” by Ali Smith (4/5) is nostalgic in tone and delves into a daughter’s memories of her mother who once served in WAAF during WWII.Wench” by Kirsty Logan (4/5)is a beautifully written story that broke my heart but shows resilience among women trapped in unfortunate circumstances.
