About this deal

Or, if you want some more thoughts on Jaipur, check out I Slay the Dragon's Jaipur Review, or this other review of Jaipur by Games With Two. Take the goods you want from the market into your hand and exchange them with goods from your hand and/or your camel herd.

You are limited to having 7 goods cards in your hand, so you may not take a goods card if you already have 7 goods cards in your hand. And of course, the artwork is absolutely lush and full of really nice detail (though this may be better examined outside of the game, you don’t want to be caught off your guard! There are good reasons why this has remained an established classic since its release in 2009, and tops our list of the best two-player board games and is a staple of our picks of the best cheap board games. There’s a surprising number of strategies in Jaipur, and you’ll find yourself trying out new approaches as you gain experience – while also learning to respond to an opponent’s style. To collect new goods, you can either pick up one card for free, take multiple cards (but you must replace these with cards from your hand) or scoop up any and all camels on the market. You can play conservatively, or give up certain goods to try to collect a full set of another, risking benefiting your opponent for the chance at a big sale.

On your turn, you can either pick up cards (which represent the goods you’ll sell) from a face-up selection in the middle of the table that’s shared between both players, or you can sell cards from your hand to exchange them for points. Jaipur is fast-paced and has a nice balance of luck and skill that makes it a good choice for passing time and for couples. You can hurriedly skim the most points-scoring tokens off the top of the market, or save up for one huge turn that’ll bag you a valuable bonus. With just a few narrow pages of rules to learn, it’s well suited for beginners or casual players but there’s easily enough strategy and replayability here to appeal to more hardcore board game fans too. There’s no feel-bad moment, so it could be a good kids board game, especially given how easy it is to learn. Yet, if you choose not to collect the more valuable goods, then you are leaving your opponent uninhibited when collecting the most valuable goods!

The goods themselves also cover a range of values – gems are most valuable, while hides are least valuable.

The suggested age is 12+ but I’ve been playing this game with my daughter since she was 9 and she had no trouble learning it. Only partially because of those others games’ inflexibility- Splendour will always be tough, Machi Koro’s always silly, Mundus Novus is the definitive breezy card game. Place three camel cards face-up between the two players and shuffle all the remaining cards together. You may take any single goods card from the card row and add it to your hand, or take all the camels in the row and add them to your herd.
