Appleby is located in the key offshore jurisdictions of Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Isle of Man, Jersey, Mauritius, and the Seychelles, as well as the international financial centres of Hong Kong and Shanghai. The parish church of St Lawrence is Grade I listed and showcases a mix of Medieval architecture from different periods. It formerly bridged the Appleby and Bongate wards of Eden District Council and the Appleby Ward of Cumbria County Council. There is a market on Jimmy Winter's Field selling a variety of goods, some traditional to the Gypsy travelling community, and a range of other horse-related products.
The horse fair is held each year in early June, attracting roughly 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers, about 1,000 caravans, several hundred horse-drawn vehicles, and about 30,000 visitors. The unspoilt beauty spot can be easily reached from Appleby, with the horseshoe-shaped waterfall flowing over Hoff Beck. The National Trust also host Easter activities for children during half term at the nearby Acorn Bank including an Easter Egg Trail in the grounds and craft activities. The Grapes pub is probably the most photographed building in Appleby, featuring as a backdrop in countless images of the town’s annual horse show.The dates for the 2024 Appleby Horse Fair will be: Thursday 6th June to Wednesday 12th June (with the main days being Thursday 6th, Friday 7th, Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June). The flashing lane is not suitable for anyone of limited mobility, such as the infirm, the very old or the very young, due to the risks associated with horses travelling at speed, and spectators are strongly advised to keep behind the barriers. Around 15 minutes away from Appleby near Temple Sowerby hides Acorn Bank; a fabulous 17th century garden with a huge collection of medicinal and culinary plants, a walled garden sheltering orchards, a wild flower meadow and a formal, sunken garden that holds a pond. The number of caravans in the Eden District in 2018 was significantly higher, approximately 20% up on 2017.
