Please consider expanding the lead to provide an accessible overview of all important aspects of the article. I was worried at first when I purchased this omnibus that I feel lost due to only knowing one of the characters in it.

In November and December 2019, Marvel released Annihilation: Scourge, a six issue storyline where Annihilus works with Nova, the Fantastic Four, Beta Ray Bill, and the Silver Surfer to stop a different invading army. One of my first ventures in to the Marvel world several years back now, I still have a soft spot for Annihilation, in part due to my love of all things Dan Abnett. Comic books don't have to be like this: Marvel 1602, Joss Whedon's X-Men run, and Ultimate Galactus are all superb, and the Ultimate Fantastic Four and X-Men and Planet Hulk all had their moments. However, their conflict, as well as several others, is in truth caused by the manipulation of Glorian, who is using the energy from their battles to reshape the world.

Annihilation provides a great introduction to Marvel's cosmic characters and is definitely a wonderful starting point for anyone looking to learn more about them.

This is a big bang space opera as a wave of giant bugs rip through the known empires of the galaxy and have mega fights with various super powered folk along the way. Keith Giffen, Simon Furman, Scott Kolins, Rick Magyar, Jorge Lucas, Ariel Olivetti, Stefano Landin, Andrea Di Vito, Andy Lanning, Christos N. Ravenous was created almost exclusively for this series, as the counterpart of Surfer and the other Heralds. It all felt a bit overwhelming for me at the time, but sat on the back burner these past 15 or so years as required reading. I get that people/businesses who bought a bunch of them on day one are doing well out of this situation, but since the MCU really took off there is a lot of new demand for Marvel's cosmic stuff, myself included, and you'd think they'd want to take advantage of that. In the big scheme of things, that event shouldn’t matter as much as the annihilation wave, and yet, it does because I have a connection to these characters so I care about them more.

During the briefing, The Annihilation Wave invades and successfully destroys the planet, including all Nova Corp members save for Richard Rider, the lone human Nova Corps member. Annihilation brings together a lot of the "cosmic" story lines and I believe lays the groundwork for the Guardians of the Galaxy and other Cosmic storylines, bringing back Draxx, Star Lord and Gamorra alongside Ronan, Nova and the Silver Surfer. Then, we discover that Annihilus's sole remaining bride gives birth to Annihilus, so Rider's actions were essentially nullified. While avoiding them, the Silver Surfer joins forces with other former heralds of Galactus Firelord and Air-Walker. Well, of course not, but a villain and a confrontation which at the outset appears foreboding and meaningful ends up as brawling power match-up and then it ends. The second volume of Guardians of the Galaxy, which began in 2008, features several of the characters in Annihilation.
