About this deal

It does have a YA feel with slightly cringey situations/ characters at times, but I still enjoyed it! If you like to play it on the safe side, I'd recommend the book for upper middle grades (8th) into high school. Well, Alex, Approximately is one of those books that gave me butterflies from all its cute and adorable moments.

You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. The reason for the restriction to four stars is just that although the gender depictions are great for the main characters, the depictions of Grace, the black best friend, and another gay character felt tokenistic. Although the climax is forced and predictable, the protagonists' backstories shed light on their respective anxieties, adding depth to their conflicts. Her first day working at a mansion-cum-museum, introverted Bailey, a white girl who sports platinum-blonde Lana Turner pin curls, meets Porter Roth, a "ridiculously good-looking" but cocky 18-year-old security guard from a legendary local surfing family. But finding someone based on online conversations alone proves harder than Bailey thought, and with her irritating but charismatic (and potentially attractive? Bailey and her dad also make many film references throughout the book, most of which I didn’t understand. The two main characters in Alex, Approximately, Bailey “Mink” and Porter “Alex,” are both awkward, smart, hilarious, and they both own up to their own unique style.

And, ya know, he can be a tad alpha-male which, hey, I love me a good 'defending my lady' scene -*whispers* There were 3 (holds up the non-existent but ever useful three finger emoji). I think a lot of the forgettable nature seemed to stem from the whole novel being very ‘info-dumpy’. Two subplots and a few too many tropes of the romance genre threaten to send the story off the rails, but the focus mostly stays on Bailey and Porter, who carry the day like true stars--the heroes and heroines of their beloved movies would be proud. There's a lot of really rich detail, from the location it takes place to the museum where Bailey, Grace and Porter work, to the references to all the films they love. He’s not that worried about Davy being on one of the most addictive and dangerous drugs in existence. But life is a whole lot messier than the movies, especially when Bailey discovers that tricky fine line between hate, love, and whatever-it-is she’s starting to feel for Porter. I love that Bailey not only adores classic movies, just like Porter, but she also leaves her house with the best hair and outfits that mirror the style of Lana Turner. Alex, Approximately is the second book I've read from Jenn Bennett and I think I loved it even more than the first.

The choice is both simpler and more complicated than she realizes, because Porter Roth is hiding a secret of his own: Porter is Alex… Approximately. The book is heavily based upon a teenage relationship and those two people falling in love, as most contemporaries are, and i really love that kind of story every so often. What I liked most about Alex, Approximately is that the story is so heartwarming and knee-weakening. There is some of the most delicious banter ever written, swoons, heartbreak, laughs, and maybe a bit of betrayal. In this delightfully charming teen spin on You've Got Mail , the one guy Bailey Rydell can't stand is actually the boy of her dreams--she just doesn't know it yet.I recommend to anyone who fancies a summer-read, especially to those who still reminisce about 90's romcom.

In essence it’s a retelling of the classic “You’ve Got Mail”, except it’s set in California and full of surfing and museums - it’s utterly. As you can probably tell from all my praise, I’m wildly obsessed with this book and I can’t wait for the rest of the world to pick Alex, Approximately up and find a story that’s full of heart, swoons and smiles.I loved the descriptions of the locales, locals, food, and the activities that she pursued while she was there.
