About this deal

The List of Suspicious Things follows 12-year-old Miv as she navigates a 1970s Yorkshire plagued by the Yorkshire Ripper. But their search for the truth reveals more secrets in their neighbourhood, within their families - and between each other - than they ever thought possible. It wouldn't have been surprised to find out the postman was a Nazi war criminal in hiding. I certainly hope Miv's following few months were a little more chilled. Don’t provide too much information. You want to pepper in those clues, not have two per chapter — otherwise you’ll overwhelm your reader with information, some of which doesn’t pertain to the murder mystery. A heartwarming, and moving experience, and I loved it. I shall be very surprised if this debut novel isn’t a runaway success, and one that the author justly deserves.

After deciding on your events, you’ll pepper them with your clues and find unique ways to solve the mystery and tie the subplots into it. Bonus Step 6: Mystery Don'ts A heartwarming tale about the power of human connection, written with empathy, warmth and care. To read it is to feel that little bit better about life' ELIZABETH DAY I'm keen to read more from Jennie Godfrey and am thrilled to award 'The List of Suspicious Things' a well-deserved 5 stars and a place on Mrs Bennett's Bookshelf - the first to receive a full 5 stars since inception in June 2023. Write up a list of external conflicts you want to use in your story and how they connect to each character.

The theft and the murder can be unrelated, or they can be part of the same motivation for the death of the victim. That’s up to you to decide. You can include several sub-plots for characters who Jessica is friends with too. It's a coming-of-age story set in Yorkshire around the time of the Ripper murders. A young girl called Miv decides to try to solve the mystery of the murderer. Think about film and television too – it’s all writing – and who wouldn’t want to read Succession in book form (for example). My current WIP has a Happy Valley vibe to it, and I’m very happy with that. Important to note: you don’t have to tie off every subplot with a neat ending as you close the book. You can leave some of them open for further exploration in the series. But, you should always give the murder mystery a satisfying conclusion, and your protagonist resolution of their current conflict or goal. Jessica has saved her bakery, she throws a party with her friends afterward to celebrate. Actionable steps: You can also plant false evidence, or clues that make it seem like someone else commited the murder. These are called ‘red herrings’ — and they must be believable. All your clues and red herrings have to make sense, after all.

After a few scrunched up manuscripts, Jennie leant on her love of true crime and hit upon her idea for The List of Suspicious Things. Soon her pen was ablaze. Hutchinson Heinemann has signed Jennie Godfrey’s “funny, clever and emotional coming-of-age story” The List of Suspicious Things in an overnight pre-empt. I’m keen to read more from Jennie Godfrey and am thrilled to award ‘The List of Suspicious Things’ a well-deserved 5 stars and a place on Mrs Bennett’s Bookshelf – the first to receive a full 5 stars since inception in June 2023. Give each of them a flaw. Her flaw is she’s duplicitous. She’s a lovely woman, but she’s got a sordid history–including a rap sheet for theft. She’s lived a hard life and wants to follow her true passion for baking.

Miv's family life is troubled, her mum has had a nervous breakdown and hasn't spoken for sometime. Her aunt has moved in to help take care of them, but with the ripper still out there, Yorkshire isn't what it used to be and there is talk of moving away. This is devastating to Miv, who would then lose her best friend, Sharon, the one stable thing in her life. Her solution is to catch the ripper, so she starts the list of suspicious things and sets out with Sharon to investigate. Along the way, the pair meet a strong cast of characters and form a pretty tight group of friends. Climax. Here comes the building action and climax of the plot as Jessica faces off against the real murderer. The List of Suspicious Things is a tender and moving coming of age story about family, friendship and community. Sometimes the strongest connections are found in the most unlikely of places. Leaving Yorkshire and her best friend Sharon simply isn't an option, no matter the dangers lurking round their way; or the strangeness at home that started the day Miv's mum stopped talking.
