As the fresh scents decay, there is a hint of peat smoke overlaying the initial smell. The first breaths from the glass are rounded out by leather and what can only be described as a green jolly rancher. Firstly, everyone appreciates different things and to the nay sayers, I am not a bot. I love a single malt, but bought this Blend after seeing that it had won some awards and was in the sale. Chivas Regal 18 Years Old has a rich amber hue and is claimed to have up to 85 distinct tastes . It begins with the aromas of dark chocolate, toffee, and dried fruits, with a hint of oakiness. The velvet palate has more chocolate, caramel, and a gentle smokiness with warm, burnt orange notes. It finishes dry and mildly spicy, with a pleasing smoke towards the very end. In the world of Scotch, it’s important to understand the difference between a single malt and a blended whisky. Some consumers read “single malt” and reflexively believe that the product is a single barrel. Instead, a single malt must be made at a single distillery from 100% malted barley and distilled on a post still. Most single malts are blends of many barrels with those specifications, a process typically referred to as “ vatting.” On the palate, I can taste smooth creamy toffee with notes of sweet fruit and spices. Later, I also get a warming hint of cinnamon and a touch of peppercorn which dances on the tongue. The finish is warm and smoky, leaving a lingering sensation on my tongue. Pouring a glass, I’m immediately hit with an earthy, herbal aroma that sort of reminds me of a florists. Trust me though, it’s actually attractively floral and slightly fruity towards the end each of each sniff. It’s inviting and pleasant. This 18 year old has been matured in 1st Fill sherry casks which has created a classic fireside whisky to share on a cold Winter’s evening. It is rich and complex while also being gently spiced, it is laced with nostalgic notes of Christmas cake, vanilla, apple strudel & dark chocolate. It’s a charming balance with distinct notes of oak and cedar, creating an intense yet enjoyably rich taste. Further in to the glass, there’s more of that earthy taste which comes from the peaty Islay malts. This gives a lovely smoky flavour that isn’t too overpowering. It really compliments the mild sweetness which comes through on the mid-palate. The Chivas Regal 18 Years Old exemplifies the skill of great whisky blending. Unlike its 12-year-old counterpart, this whisky has a considerably stronger spicy bite on the tongue, and the earthy, musty notes become more intense as well.
