When the angels appeared in Kelly’s crystal, he communicated with them in Enochian, using a complicated procedure. He set up charts of squares either filled with letters or left blank. The angels spelled out messages by pointing with a rod to various squares.

Conjugation can result in spelling changes which can appear to be random or haphazard. Due to this, Aaron Leitch has expressed doubt as to whether Enochian actually has conjugations. [32] The very scant evidence of Enochian verb conjugation seems quite reminiscent of English, including the verb 'to be' which is highly irregular. [5] As for the 200 Watcher Angels who revealed both the Secrets and The Mysteries of the Universe to people here on Earth; The Ancient of Days had them bound in chains, by the Archangels that stands before God's own Throne, and thrown in to Tartarus by Raphael. The use of complementary colors, called flashing colors in the Golden Dawn, means that the watchtowers belong to the class of talismans called flashing tablets. The flashing colors were supposed to draw energy from the atmosphere. [4] The painted tablets were placed on the walls of the temple during some rituals to symbolize the four quarters. A favorite ritual in the Golden Dawn was the Opening by Watchtower. This is a preliminary ritual to purify space and call upon the guardians of the four quarters, which is the origin of casting the magic circle in Wicca. As part of the Opening by Watchtower, the practitioner uses the each elemental ceremonial weapon (air dagger, fire wand, water cup and Earth pentacle) to summon the angels of the quarters. In the South, for instance, the practitioner uses the Fire Wand to trace an invoking Fire Pentagram, then summons the angels using the three names of God found in the Fire Tablet: Fell Smith, Charlotte (1909), The Life of Dr. John Dee (1527 - 1608), London: Constable & Co., ISBN 978-1291940411 .

The Thirty Aethyrs are an integral part of the Enochian magical system, representing a sequence of spiritual planes or realms that practitioners explore as they ascend from 30 ( TEX, the lowest) to 1 ( LIL, the highest). In the practice of Enochian magic, magicians document their visions, experiences, and impressions within each successive Aethyr, marking their progression through this mystical hierarchy. [27] The process of astral projection using an Enochian ritual is a long and complicated one. It should not be attempted by beginners or those who are not experienced at astral projection.

Regardie, Golden Dawn, Book 9, describes Enochian magic in the Golden Dawn, including detailed information on the watchtowers. To figure out what the Enochian word for God is, I went through Dee’s diaries again to see what I might have missed. What I found was this: On Tuesday, April 10, 1584, when Dee and Kelley were in Cracow, Poland, they had another angelic communication, wherein the angel Nalvage gave the two men a tablet. On it was written the names of groups of angels and some short descriptions of them, which we’re not concerned with here. What we are concerned with here was something else written on the tablet in its four corners: IAD--the name of God. Compounds are frequent in the Enochian corpus. Modifiers and indicators are typically compounded with the nouns and verbs modified or indicated. These compounds can occur with demonstrative pronouns and conjunctions, as well as with various forms of the verb 'to be'. The compounding of nouns with adjectives or other verbs is less common. Compounds may exhibit variant spellings of the words combined. [31] Conjugation [ edit ] In the early 1580s, John Dee's pursuit of understanding the secrets of nature left him dissatisfied with his progress. Seeking a more profound wisdom encompassing both natural and artificial truths, Dee's journey evolved into a spiritual exploration. Dee wrote: Dumezil, Georges. Archaic Roman Religion. Baltimore and London: Johns Hopkins University Press, 1996.Called Angelical by Dee, the Enochian language is an occult constructed language [6] — said by its originators to have been received from angels — recorded in the private journals of John Dee and his colleague Edward Kelley in late 16th-century England. [7] The term "Enochian" comes from Dee's assertion that the Biblical patriarch Enoch had been the last human (before Dee and Kelley) to know the language. According to Wynn Wescott, each letter may be pronounced separately as its name in English or sometimes as the first consonant and vowel of its Hebrew name, e.g. N may be [ɛn] or [nu] (from nun). However, consonants-vowel sequences may be optionally run together into single syllables. E.g. ta may be pronounced [teɪ ɑː] or [tɑː]; co, [koʊ]; ar, [ɑːr]; re, [reɪ]. [21]

One notable feature of the Aethyrs is the presence of "Governors". Each of the 30 Aethyrs is inhabited by three Governors, with the exception of TEX, which has four, totaling 91 Governors across the entire system. These Governors are considered angelic or spiritual entities associated with the Aethyrs and are believed to hold significant knowledge and power within their respective realms. [27] There are two angels per cross. One calls forth a servant angel and the other is used to command the angel. These angels are only invoked when the Adept wishes to work with a specific subservient angel. Drawing on his in-depth study of John Dee’s diaries, DeSalvo explains how Dee and Kelley were given the Enochian tables and calls but their communications with the angels were severed before they received the full practical instructions for Enochian magic. To this day, most magical groups improvise and make up rituals based on their own ideas and imagination--the magic they practice is not true angelic magic. A number of fonts for the Enochian script are available. They use the ASCII range, with the letters assigned to the codepoints of their English equivalents. [22] [23] [24] [25] Grammar [ edit ] Morphology [ edit ] Usually, showing an interest in such things during this time period would have been incredibly dangerous. But Dee’s expertise in mathematics and astrology lent an air of credibility to his pursuits, making him a respected figure in his time.

In response, Dee turned his attention toward the supernatural as a means to acquire the knowledge he sought. He used scrying, employing individuals known as scryers or crystal-gazers to act as intermediaries between himself and angelic beings. [2] Dee's initial attempts with various scryers proved underwhelming, until he encountered Edward Kelley in 1582. Operating under the pseudonym Edward Talbot due to a forgery conviction, Kelley's remarkable abilities caught Dee's attention and impressed him greatly. [3] Sledge, J. J. (2010). The Five Books of Mystery serve as a comprehensive guide to Enochian magic, encompassing language, symbolism, rituals, and practical techniques.

These rituals need not be slavishly imitated; on the contrary the student should do nothing the object of which he does not understand; also, if he has any capacity whatever, he will find his own crude rituals more effective than the highly polished ones of other people. Jones, David. "John Dee & the Enochian Apocalypse." New Dawn the World’s Most Unusual Magazine. September 8, 2012. Dee and Kelly were the pioneers who blazed the trail. Along the trail of forgotten and lost knowledge were the Four Watchtowers of the Universe. These Watchtower Tablets were adapted by Mathers to represent the Four Elements of Fire, Water, Air and Earth. When the Adept invokes the three Secret Holy Names of God, the King is also automatically activated. In addition, the King may be invoked as a specific force. These Names are invoked during the four Elemental Grade Ceremonies (initiations) by the Hierophant of the Golden Dawn in the Outer. Through the power of the Secret Names the general nature of the element involved in the initiation is filtered through the Tablet into the "Aura" or sphere of sensation of the advancing candidate. The result is the establishment of a magical link and affinity with the element of the Initiation. This serves to empower the candidate in that new elemental powers are now available to him or her. About a year later, at the court of King Stephen Báthory in Kraków, where both alchemists stayed for some time, another set of texts was reportedly received through Kelley. [ citation needed] These texts comprise 48 poetic verses with English translations, which in Dee's manuscripts are called Claves Angelicae, or Angelic Keys. Dee was apparently intending to use these Keys to open the "Gates of Understanding" [10] represented by the magic squares in Liber Loagaeth: Find sources: "Watchtower"magic– news · newspapers · books · scholar · JSTOR ( December 2012) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message) Various Authors (2021), Alchemy, Routledge Library Editions, Taylor & Francis, ISBN 978-1136191718 . In each tablet there are three Secret Holy Names of God which are extracted from the horizontal cross bar of the central cross of each Tablet. In all there are twelve Holy Names on four Tablets which infer a serious connection and bridge between the Macrocosm and the personal Microcosm of one's own "sphere of sensation."
