About this deal

Jane Rizzoli is trying to solve the baffling homicide of a normal everyone-loves-her nurse, murdered in her own home. The many plot threads do come together after some good twists and false turns, but not until late in the novel and will keep you guessing at how they could be related. Sofia Suarez, a widow and nurse who was universally liked by her neighbors, lies bludgeoned to death in her own home. This gets her into a lot of trouble mostly because she is so convinced that no one listens to her suspicions, and eventually she acts on them.

Her daughter and the police department dismiss her as a busybody, but Angela is sure there is something sinister going on and begins her own ameteur investigation, little realising the danger she is walking into…"That was the burden of working in homicide; you are always too late to change the victim's fate. My thanks to the author, Tess Gerritsen, publisher Random House UK, Transworld Publishers, Bantam Press, and NetGalley (UK) for the opportunity to read and review this title.Although I correctly guessed who the guilty party was I had no idea why they did it until Gerritson shared it with us at the end.

On the other side, we have a slightly annoying mother trying to solve problems in her own neighborhood and just stirring the pot. Sofia Suarez has lived a calm life, loved by many at the hospital at which she works, as well as her friends. For new readers, this reviewer bets you are only about 300 pages away from becoming new fans, and you’ll soon be scrambling to get your hands on the prior 12 books in the series. Jane Rizzoli, Maura Isles and Angela Rizzoli feel like old friends, all three strong women with fascinating backstories, identifiable and likeable, despite their various foibles. It has been five years since the last book; however, no worries about reading the past books; you will catch up and can be read as a standalone.

The family is well off; the mother is very protective of her daughter, who has been traumatized by a hit-and-run accident and is still recovering from that episode. I particularly enjoyed Angela Rizzoli’s character in this story and liked how Gerritsen used her to highlight how older women are often invisible and easily dismissed. Jane and her patner, are investigating the murder of Sofia Suarez, a widowed nurse who was liked by neighbors and co-workers. This was a thrilling page-turner of a book by physician Tess Gerritsen, whose writing is so believable that it leaps from the page and captures you right from the beginning! But lest the reader get too carried away with the Suarez murder, and while Jane finds herself immersed in that investigation, Angela Rizzoli vies for her daughter’s attention with a mystery of her own.

Can’t imagine anything more tedious than their Scrabble get-togethers, so reading about them was incredibly irritating. I thought I had things figured out but this really delivered a twisty ending, though I at least was right on the who. She’s made it her business to know everything going on in her neighborhood and these people won’t let her in.

Whereas it’s true that Listen to Me wasn’t my personal favourite, I still relished this read, and took great pleasure in indulging in Jane, Maura, and co. I couldn’t wait to not only be back with the familiar characters, but also immerse myself in Gerritsen’s darkly atmospheric words. While this is no cosy mystery, there is added domestic and character interest which add occasional light humour to the narrative. There are no immediate motives for the crime, but when Rizzoli discovers that Suarez was guarding a dangerous secret, everything changes.

Jane, the notoriously bad-ass homicide detective and her partner Barry Frost, as well as Maura the quiet medical examiner. In this one they are investigating the murder of a nurse but there is also an alternative point of view as. Whilst the reveal wasn't as much of a 'woww' moment for me, it was cleverly crafted and I loved my trip down memory lane. This really sounds as if they have used AI for sections of the book, or at least heavily edited the narrators performance to it’s detriment. I wanted to read it all in one sitting, but, unfortunately, life got in the way and I had to do it over two days. That was pre-pandemic, so by my calculations it’s been 142 years since I read the twelfth book, give or take. Adding to the mystery is the stalking of a female college student who turns out to have been a patient of Ms. Rizzoli knows they need to protect this young woman, but it’s only tangentially connected to her murder case, isn’t it?
