REN is indeed a beloved brand in the clean beauty addicts community because it avoids many of the infamous “controversial ingredients” but still offers formulas that also contain ingredients that are certainly less natural, but recognized for their effectiveness. It’s indeed quite rare to find a sunscreen with high protection (here, an SPF30) that doesn’t use silicones and/or alcohol in its formula. They indeed make it possible to considerably lighten the texture and avoid the greasy feeling that you usually have with sunscreen with mineral filters. This natural sunscreen from Green People is 84% organic with a Nano version of Titanium Dioxide sun filter. It’s beige-tinted , so it doesn’t have such a white caste as other mineral sunscreens often do. It is quite hard to run in especially on dry skin, and pills on arm hair. I like the eco-friendly sugar cane recyclable tube and Green People have fantastic ethics. When we tested this pricey mineral sunscreen it barely provided a third of its claimed SPF, and it failed to provide enough UVA protection either.

Sorry REN, I tried to like this sunscreen, but it is nowhere near the elegance and efficacy of formula and execution found in many Japanese brands, even those found in the drugstore or pharmacy.Most natural brands still prefer these mineral filters because they’re less controversial than chemical filters (the latter have a reputation for being endocrine disrupters and also polluting the oceans for some of them). However, terms such as 'reef-safe' and ocean-friendly aren't regulated, so there's no consensus on what they mean or which products they can be applied to. But an effective sunscreen that is nice to wear and doesn’t mess up my makeup is like the Holy Grail!

Hyperpigmentation on skin happens not only from exposure to the UV rays, but can also be caused by the skin heating up. For someone who struggles with hyperpigmentation like me, I do not run risks like this, hence my preference for SPF50 sunscreen at minimum.
