About this deal

Then again, the bond between Leif (Sam Corlett) and Harald (Leo Suter) is solid, legit…and as unreal as Santa Claus. Let’s talk real history here:Leif Erikson was born in 970 and died in 1020; while Harald Hardrada was born in 1015 and died on September 25, 1066. So, Harald was 5 years old when Leif died. Meaning: there was no chance at all those two meet each other (not even mentioning the possibility that Harald had an affair with Freydís).

While our historical perception of the Vikings might be changing, the cultural footprint they have left has been indelible. From the Northern reaches of Scandinavia, the Vikings have taken over the world's imagination, providing a mystical and bloodthirsty group whose visual flair and habits have been caricatured in hundreds of films, TV shows and books. In time, our evolving view of who the Vikings were and where they engaged may begin to afford this picture more nuance. But until then, Vikings: Valhalla will join a long line that brings this seafaring, ingenious and undeniably brutal people to life. Into this mix, the writers insert a small boatload of Greenlanders, including Leif and Freydís. (While Norway was very much part of the richly connected north Atlantic world, Greenland was remote even by Viking standards and played no real part in the political dramas of the era.) The group comes to Norway, where Cnut is amassing his army, in search of revenge; after completing their mission, Leif joins Cnut’s army and befriends Harald, while Freydís decides to stay behind in the great Norwegian port city of Kattegat. Itching for more details on the upcoming series? Here’s everything we know about Vikings: Valhalla. According to the Old Norse poem Grímnismál (“The Song of the Hooded One”), the roof of the “gold-bright” Valhalla is made of shields, and has spears for its rafters. Seats made of breastplates surround the many feasting tables of the vast hall. Its gates are guarded by wolves, and eagles fly above it. [2]Yet the longevity of the Vikings would have been underpinned by the "almost industrial" work of women in creating sails, clothing, rope and other vital materials. While this may sound prosaic, it was integral to the Vikings' success, and there is also the suggestion that women were more directly involved in seafaring, exploration, and warfare during the period. For example, Dr Eleanor Barraclough's Beyond the Northlands traces the Vikings' journey from the edges of the Holy Land to the Americas through the old Sagas. In doing this, she highlights a wide range of female protagonists, including Gudrid Thorbjarnardóttir – known as víðförla ("well-travelled") – a woman with "light chestnut coloured hair" and "huge eyes" who is credited with being the first European to give birth in North America. Gudrid would later take a pilgrimage to Rome following Iceland's conversion to Christianity, and in Barraclough's estimation, she is the "real hero of the Vinland Sagas". The series tries to stage a Christian versus pagan holy war while recognizing the multifaceted nature of religious life at the time. Even Olaf, who seeks to become the Christian king of Norway by allying himself with Christian terrorists (berserkers who kill any pagan pilgrims they meet on the road, massacre and decapitate entire villages, and burn temples to the ground), makes it clear that he wants to maintain Kattegat as an open port city—a gateway to the world. Loosely based on the life of real Viking king Ragnar Lothbrok, the show turned the Ancient Norse from half-remembered myths to real people. It didn't shy away from their more violent practices — the show more or less told the disturbing truth about the Vikings' blood eagle execution, for example — but it also showed them as very much human, with desires, fears, romantic entanglements, religious beliefs and doubts, and even a sense of humor. Vikings: Valhalla starts off great, and right away we see Leif and Harald becoming BFFs. That’s so cool!
