The drafts of the poem reveal that it originally contained almost twice as much material as the final published version. The significant cuts are in part due to Ezra Pound's suggested changes, although Eliot himself also removed large sections.

The Song of the (three) Thames-daughters begins here. From line 292 to 306 inclusive they speak in turn. V. Götterdämmerung, III, i: the Rhine-daughters. The poem's title is often mistakenly given as "Waste Land" (as used by Weston) or "Wasteland", omitting the definite article. However, in a letter to Ezra Pound, Eliot politely insisted that the title was three words beginning with "The". It would be like reading Shakespeare’s The Tempest and coming to the conclusion that it is a play about the follies of revenge. This is true, but it is also about many other things that combine to form a piece of artistic brilliance. When I read The Waste Land I feel stupid. I feel like I’m reading something that I cannot quite understand, and this annoys me. I feel like at times T.S Elliot is being pretentious, inserting references just do demonstrate his intellect rather than contribute something meaningful to the poem at large. And I don’t like it. I don't want to find out what they mean. Before the editing had even begun, Eliot found a publisher. [E] Horace Liveright of the New York publishing firm of Boni & Liveright was in Paris for a number of meetings with Ezra Pound. At a dinner on 3 January 1922 (see 1922 in poetry), he made offers for works by Pound, James Joyce ( Ulysses) and Eliot. Eliot was to get a royalty of 15% for a book version of the poem planned for autumn publication. [14]

For most Americans, the closest experience of the possibility of death comes from car or sport accidents and illnesses. Many people, of course, rely on the normal life patterns surrounding them for reassurance that they are magically protected from death. In war, though, there are no normal life patterns around them. Soldiers become aware that anyone can die and no one has magical immunity. No prayer, no amulet, no ritual, no strength or skill, no powerful person or strategy, nothing can protect you from a sudden act of warfare in the physical space around you. In the days of battle you see perfectly decent, good, family men chopped mercilessly into pieces despite their utilizing every bit of training and good fortune. a b c Tagaziel (September 14, 2021). Froude, Elizabeth Vol. I, ch. iv, letter of De Quadra to Philip of Spain: “In the afternoon we were in a barge, watching the games on the river. (The queen) was alone with Lord Robert and myself on the poop, when they began to talk nonsense, and went so far that Lord Robert at last said, as I was on the spot there was no reason why they should not be married if the queen pleased.” Kamen, Matt (May 26, 2014). Five "test case" jury trials in federal court in Raleigh, North Carolina, some selected by the neighbors, some selected by the lawyers for the Smithfield Foods subsidiary that owned the hogs and arranged for their care. The five trials resulted in five verdicts: Each of the juries found Smithfield's sub to be liable for "nuisance." Four of the juries awarded punitive damages. Three awarded punitive damages in the millions of dollars (though, unbeknownst to the juries, these punitives awards would be trimmed under NC law capping punitives), one in the hundreds of millions. One appeal decided by the Fourth Circuit in Richmond, which affirmed the damages verdict and the right to punitives. Then a confidential settlement. But now I can feel all smug knowing where the quotable lines come from, even if I still have no clue about what it actually *is*. In 'The Waste Land', I think Eliot was ranting at literature, society, religion and culture for failing to stop the 'collapse' of civilization. Eliot also rages at the ultimate impotence of classic literature to warn the individual or society about the utter devastation and cruelty of war. The poem is full of allusions to those myths and wiseman sayings which reflect the darkness in humanity rather than the wisdom. He includes bits of memory in his poem which emphasize the cluelessness and obtuseness of people. Commodore 64/128 Wasteland Reference Card" (PDF). You'll never see trash the same way again’Insisto, no me gusta la poesía, pero cada vez que encuentro un libro como este de T. S. Eliot lo quiero en mi biblioteca. Apocalypse Now fu probabilmente il primo film in lingua originale che ho visto: era quella che all’epoca si chiamava una “prima visione”. Ero appena approdato in California per la prima volta, non potevo certo perderlo. This is a poem that deserves to be read, taken apart and studied, and then simply read again and appreciated. This is an epic tale – a years' long battle that involved all manner of political and legal wrangling- ups and downs, and a few huge surprises. It’s riveting, but it also very enlightening and educational. Due to a line counting error Eliot footnoted some of the last lines incorrectly (with the last line being given as 433). The error was never corrected and a line count of 433 is often cited.

ISBN 0-7450-0738-4.Critically acclaimed and commercially successful, Wasteland was intended to be followed by two separate sequels in the 1990s, but Electronic Arts dropped claims of Fountain of Dreams being a sequel and Interplay's Meantime was canceled. The game's general setting and concept became the basis for Interplay's 1997 role-playing video game Fallout and the Fallout series. Decades later, inXile Entertainment, founded by the game's director Brian Fargo, released two proper sequels: Wasteland 2 (2014) and Wasteland 3 (2020). For once I myself saw with my own eyes the Sibyl of Cumae hanging in a cage, and when the boys said, "Sibyl, what do you want?" she replied "I want to die." So, for those of you struggling to get through the wordy, allusion-tastic, multiple-language maze that is The Waste Land, I can only tell you this: Relax and just enjoy the ride. You have nothing to fear. T.S. Eliot loves you.
