About this deal

Eric is based on the "prince" character of Hans Christian Andersen's 1837 fairy tale " The Little Mermaid," but was adapted by the writer-directors Ron Clements and John Musker for the film adaptation. According to the film's screenplay, Eric had just turned 18 in the film, which would make him two years older than Ariel. [1] Eric is voiced by Christopher Daniel Barnes in the original film, Kingdom Hearts II, and Disney Dreamlight Valley, by Jeff Bennett in the prequel television series, and by Rob Paulsen in the direct-to-video sequel. Prince Eric is the only prince in the "Disney Princess" franchise not to sing in an original movie.

Horatio Thelonious Ignacious Crustaceous Sebastian [4] is a red Jamaican crab and a servant of King Triton, and also his main musical composer. His main song is " Under the Sea". He is voiced by Samuel E. Wright in the films, the TV series and the Sebastian segments from the Marsupilami series. a b Nusair, David. "Top 10 Disney Villains". About.com. This article lists animated original characters from Disney's The Little Mermaid franchise, covering the 1989 film, its prequel television series, its direct-to-video sequel and prequel films, stage musical adaptation, and the live action adaption. The character was developed solely for the Disney film and is not derived from the original Hans Christian Andersen story. Early on in the writing and development of the film, the character was originally an English-butler lobster named Clarence; songwriter Howard Ashman proposed changing Clarence to a Jamaican Rastafari crab and shifting the music style throughout the film to reflect this. In 2016, Rebel Wilson performed the role of Ursula at a stripped-down concert version of The Little Mermaid at the Hollywood Bowl, which featured the songs from the film and four songs from the Broadway musical. [90] Wilson was praised for her performance, which was described by The Huffington Post as "pitch perfect." [91] Lobster Mobster and Da Shrimp (voiced by Joe Alaskey and David Lander) are a lobster and shrimp duo who are bumbling con-artists and constantly antagonize Ariel and her friends and are recurring antagonists from the television series. They are modeled after the stereotypes of the gangsters from the 1920s.On June 6, 2016, Benson performed the role of Ariel at the Hollywood Bowl's concert performance of The Little Mermaid. [13] She also made a special appearance in ABC's 2019 live musical spectacular The Little Mermaid Live! I would say it was a little more cultural than spiritual — a little bit more religious than relational. And I was drawing toward the Lord in middle school, but I didn't quite know how to have that personal relationship at the time. When I started dating my husband at 18, he introduced me to Christ, and asked, "Do you have a relationship with Jesus?" And I said, "I love Him, and I know He's the Son of God, but I don't think I have a relationship with Him — like I can talk to Him by myself without going through the priest and stuff." And so, I had a really big conversion when I was 19, and Ray is responsible for opening that relationship for me.a b "An Interview with Jodi Benson, Voice of Ariel". blogs.disney.com. In the 2007 stage musical adaptation, Grimsby says that the reason he wants Eric to marry is because he (Grimsby) had made a promise to Eric's late father to ensure it. Though Grimsby is reluctant to believe Eric's story of being saved from drowning by a girl, he comes up with the idea of holding a contest in which the princesses of the land are to sing for Eric, in the hopes that one of them will be the right girl. In the stage musical, the role is originated by Jonathan Freeman. In late 1986, Benson first heard of the audition for The Little Mermaid through lyricist and playwright Howard Ashman. The two had just worked together in the Broadway show Smile until its run ended early. He knew she would be the perfect fit for the role and that she would be a great replica of Ariel. [16] [17] After hearing the demo for "Part of Your World", she sang a small part of it on tape where it was later sent to Disney executives. Before her audition for The Little Mermaid, she was primarily a stage actress. It was Ashman's first Disney project. In early 1988, Benson won the role of Ariel and has been voicing her ever since. [16] [18] She also made a cameo in the 2023 live-action adaptation of the film, directed by Rob Marshall, as a market vendor who hands Ariel ( Halle Bailey) a fork during her tour of the kingdom. In the 2008 direct-to-DVD prequel The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning, Triton bans music from Atlantica after his wife Athena is crushed to death by a pirate ship. He forces everyone and the city to follow a strict daily schedule, straining his relationship with free-spirited Ariel. He eventually lifts the ban on music and appoints Sebastian as his court composer. Jim Cummings replaces Kenneth Mars as the voice of King Triton, due to Mars' pancreatic cancer diagnosis. [19] [20] [21] Carroll was not the filmmakers' first choice for the role; Clements, Musker and Ashman had long debated who should voice the villainess, [22] the casting of whom was long and tedious, spanning an entire year. [23] [24] In his book Makin' Toons: Inside the Most Popular Animated TV Shows and Movies, author Allan Neuwirth documented that the filmmakers searched "for just the right performer who could put across the deep-voiced, world-weary, deadpan villainess they had in mind–but never quite snaring their catch". [25] While Ashman was interested in actress Joan Collins because he was a fan of her performance as Alexis Colby in the soap opera Dynasty, [24] Clements and Musker favored actress Bea Arthur, for whom they had actually written the role, [3] describing Ursula as "having a Bea Arthur-type basso voice" in early drafts of their screenplay. [22] Clements and Musker fully expected Arthur to accept the role because she had already been working for Disney's Touchstone Television on the sitcom The Golden Girls. [24] However, Arthur's agent resented the directors-writers for insinuating that her client voice a witch, [24] refusing to even present the script to the actress. At the behest of Disney executives Michael Eisner and Jeffrey Katzenberg, director and screenwriter Ron Clements was among several film-makers instructed to research new story ideas that could potentially be adapted into the studio's next major animated film release. [3] Clements first discovered Hans Christian Andersen's classic fairy tale " The Little Mermaid" at a local bookstore, and began deliberating why Disney had never attempted to adapt the story before. [3] Clements eventually learned that Walt Disney himself had actually attempted to adapt the fairy tale into a feature-length animated film as early as the 1930s, [4] but the project was ultimately shelved due in part to its sad ending. [5] [3] Clements suggested "The Little Mermaid" to Katzenberg, who finally green-lit it after having first rejected it. [4] Nouryeh, Elizabeth (March 7, 2016). "The 10 Best (Worst) Disney Villains". Urchin (voiced by Danny Cooksey) is an orphaned merboy with an olive-green tail and is one of the main characters of the prequel television series, in which he is a close friend of Ariel, Sebastian and Flounder, and often goes on adventures with them. Urchin first appears in the fourth episode of the series, "Urchin". In it, Urchin is seen to be an orphan who lives by himself and wants badly to have friends. He is approached by small-time villains Lobster Mobster and Da Shrimp, who bring him into their gang and use him to steal food for them.
