About this deal

The Cornish believe in using the correct etiquette when visiting a local tearoom and enjoying a Cornish cream tea. Traditionally, you should brew your tea in an ornate silver teapot and the person nearest the pot should pour for everyone, using your finest china teacups, pouring the tea first and milk and sugar after. Split the scone in half and apply the jam and cream. But their idyllic winter excursion is thrown into turmoil when the canal freezes over and an unexpected visitor appears on the scene. Are Summer and Mason facing the Big Freeze in more ways than one? Or will this be one Winter Warmer that they’ll never forget?

No doubt about it, this book was a fabulous read that I urge you to place at the very top of your summer reading this year. It will provide you with the perfect slice of escapism that so many people are desperately craving right now. The only thing I will say is that I understand that this book is book six in the series and using Cornish Cream Tea has worked well for the books all along but I feel we are moving away from the cream tea aspect. I understand wanting to keep the same words in the titles as readers have become familiar with the series and the setting etc but the characters that established this series have been dealt with. Yes, they do make a brief appearance in this book and it’s fun to be able to say oh yes I recall so and so from this book and you remember what happened. But I think the series has become so well established and we have even moved away from the original setting, although not too far, that perhaps the title is slightly misleading at this stage. But that’s just my opinion and really in the major scheme of things it’s very minor. So we have Thea who has come away on holiday, but also has her mind on her future and making her dreams come true. She is staying next door to builder Ben, who is renovating his own home and clearly running from something himself.

The Cornish believe that the jam should be applied to the warm scone first and then a dollop of clotted cream on top. However, Devonians think the cream should be spread first and then the strawberry jam on top. Either way, the Cornish cream teas are delicious, but this doesn’t stop the great scone debate from going on, tearing the West Country apart! I immediately warmed to Thea’s character and I loved how she was written and portrayed. I was honestly rooting for her from the get go and I was insanely invested that made it hard to tear myself away from the book. ‘Just a few chapters’ became a ‘whoops I’ve read half’ to ‘oh well, I can’t leave it there’ and then before I knew it, it was finished! Having lived in Cornwall my whole life up until very recently, I love losing myself in McLaughlin’s fictional counterpart. Initially, I wasn’t enamoured with the change in location when the previous instalment came out, but I feel with this new novel I warmed to Port Karadow more. I think this was helped by the summer setting opposed to Christmas. Cornwall is magic in the sunshine, not so much in the cold mizzle! (Note: That's what we Cornish call that really light rain that gets you absolutely soaked!) Thea and Ben grow closer as they spend more time together, going on walks, visiting the lighthouse and more. I loved reading about their relationship and it tugged on my heart when the third act conflict/dark night of the soul happened. Don’t get us started on the pronunciation of the word scone! Does it rhyme with ‘gone’ or ‘bone’, is it ‘skon’ or ‘skoan’?

Whatever you’re doing this summer, whether you’re going on holiday or staying at home, I hope you find some lovely things to read. Thea has come away for a long break where all she wants is to escape in a beautiful place and with as many books as possible. Books are her world, being a librarian satisfies only a small part of that, but if she could own a bookshop then that would be even better. But these are just dreams. Abby Field loves every inch of Meadowsweet Nature Reserve on the idyllic Suffolk coast where she lives and works. Especially Swallowtail House, the rambling but empty country house that seems to look out at her each time she passes it’s shut-up windows. A Christmas Tail was first published in four ebook parts, known as The Primrose Terrace series and titled: Maisie Winters has everything she could ever want. She lives in the idyllic Cornish town of Port Karadow, has a jammy job in her dad's shop, adores her rescue mutt, and has time to take the landscape photos she loves. This is an absolute dream for any book lover. A librarian looking for premises to open a bookshop, numerous mentions of books (as if my tbr pile wasn’t already ridiculous!) and a hunky love interest to swoon over. The story is set in Port Karadow, Cornwall. It is wonderfully descriptive allowing the reader to immerse themselves in the narrative. A dream of having a bookshop by the sea. I couldn’t think of anything better. I loved Thea and Ben (😍😍) and it was great catching up with the other characters from previous books and obviously re-visiting the idyllic Cornish setting. We are a small family business, based in the beautiful Cornish Countryside, and we are passionate about the humble Cornish cream tea! So we bake everything ourselves👩‍🍳, by hand✋. Using recipes that have been handed down through generations. They are obviously a closely guarded secret🤫. We may have 'tweaked' a few but our Traditional scone recipe remains untouched. Why mess with perfection!
