About this deal

Raimi crafts a world that is both horrific, and yet darkly comedic at the same time, shifting tone with each sequel to bring a different aspect of the evil of the deadites to fruition.

Luckily the 4K UHD handles the darkness a lot better, and handily outclasses the 1080p Blu-ray without even breaking a swear. Evil Dead was not made with high definition in mind, but this is a true representation of the source material and must be appreciated on that level. Once there, however, the group find themselves beset by demons from the nearby woods when they begin reading from an unearthed Book of the Dead.

In an effort to straighten out their drug-ravaged friend Mia (Jane Levy), a group of five 20-somethings decide to decamp to an isolated backwoods cabin in the mountains of Tennessee. The full screen version on the UK box-set is the same transfer as was used on the earlier Anchor Bay 1-5 picture disc DVD releases, and has the Cheryl zoom tweak, but the lightning shot has been put back in.

Make-Up Test (1 min) — Exactly as the title implies, viewers can watch raw footage of early make-up work and effects.Documentary: 'One by One We Will Take You: The Untold Saga of The Evil Dead' (54 min) — With interviews of cast and crew, the doc is an all-inclusive and widespread look at Sam Raimi's low-budget classic and its unexpected impact on the horror genre. The DVD comes in a replica Book Of The Dead illustrated by Tom Sullivan, and although a mass produced item, the quality is really still quite decent. The banging of the swing-seat outside the cabin is a touch more forceful, even sounding clearer during the gang's otherwise silent drive up to the place at the start. Particularly interesting is the section on the film's second coming with its triumphant impact on videotape, but this whole thing is thoroughly entertaining, perfectly frank and fun-but-fascinating. Shadow delineation is keen and detail is never sunken or lost amid the darker portions of the image.

This chat-track, so far down the line and, of course, not the first occasion that they have sat down to talk endlessly about The Evil Dead, has an often dry and sort of grandfatherly air to it of people who have clearly “grown up” and seen the film in question far too many times now, though this does not deter them from a lull-less conversation. The tone is subdued, but informative, yet we are still sitting there just waiting for the funny stuff to arrive. They are all involved with the horror industry, and have all been mightily influenced by what Sam Raimi did. The Book of the Dead: The Other Pages" (2 min) — Essentially, alternate takes of Ash looking through the book. Although most of the footage has aged badly, and there's little explanation of what we're seeing, this intimidating piece shows some great material fans are sure to love and enjoy watching. This image reveals more of the tangle of wires and twisted steel, stone and timber in the clawed hand of the busted bridge. Anchor Bay Home Entertainment has detailed its upcoming Blu-ray release of Ash vs Evil Dead: The Complete First Season.
