About this deal

The list of names consists of entries from 14 southeast and east Asian nations and regions and the United States who have territories directly affected by typhoons. The submitted names are arranged into a list, the names on the list will be used from up to down, from left to right. When all names on the list are used, it will start again from the left-top corner. When a typhoon causes damage in a region, the affected region can request for retiring the name in the next session of the ESCAP/WMO Typhoon Committee. A new name will be decided by the region whose name was retired. Moving up the eastern coast of Japan’s main island, Honshu, and impacting eight prefectures across the island, Typhoon Hagibis was the worst storm to hit the country in 60 years with torrential rain and wind speeds of 225kph (140mph) – equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale (BBC News, 2019a; BBC News, 2019b; Watchers, 2019). Hagibis underwent the most rapid intensification of any tropical cyclone in the western Pacific in at least 23 years, becoming a major hurricane-level typhoon in just six hours (Watchers, 2019). It follows Typhoon Faxai which hit Japan last month.

Accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) is used by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other agencies to express the activity of individual tropical cyclones that are above tropical storm strength and entire tropical cyclone seasons. [29] It is calculated by taking the squares of the estimated maximum sustained velocity of every active tropical storm (wind speed 35 knots or higher) at six-hour intervals. [29] The numbers are usually divided by 10,000 to make them more manageable. The unit of ACE is 10 4 kn 2, and for use as an index the unit is assumed. [29] As well as being squared for ACE, wind speed can also be cubed, which is referred to as the Power Dissipation Index (PDI). [30] BBC News. 2019b. The Coriolis Effect

Record-breaking rainfall also occurred in the town of Hakone, with more than a metre (3ft) of rain falling in 48 hours, the highest total ever recorded in Japan in that timeframe (BBC News, 2019a). Several other areas received 30% to 40% of the average annual rainfall in just 48 hours (Watchers, 2019). Ricardo García-Herrera, Pedro Ribera, Emiliano Hernández and Luis Gimeno (2006). If a tropical depression reaches wind speeds of 35 knots (65km/h; 40mph) then it will be classified as a moderate tropical storm and assigned a name by either the Sub Regional Center in Mauritius or Madagascar. No matter how strong a subtropical system is in this basin, it is always designated as a subtropical depression. [23] a b c d Fu; etal. (2023).
