About this deal

Since surfing means you are exposed to the sun for long periods, and the sea will batter your body, what should you look out for in a sunscreen? However, mineral sunscreens can sometimes leave whitish ‘casts’ on the skin, so may not be suitable for people with darker skin tones (even though this is much less common now). I had the pleasure to have an chat with founder James Marshall himself, he said something that really made sense to me:

Mineral sunscreens contain zinc oxide or titanium oxide. They work by creating a barrier preventing UV radiation from penetrating your skin. They immediately take effect, but they leave a white film that makes your skin look pale. They are far less likely to irritate sensitive skin. What makes a good sunscreen for surfing? Chemical sunscreens sink into the skin to work, and the chemical UV filters are what harms coral reefs and aquatic life and cause skin irritation. The countries/regions that currently have full or partial chemical sunscreen bans are Mexico, the USA (Hawaii, Key West, U.S. Virgin Islands), Bonaire, Aruba, and Palau. Why?Discover nine of our favourite mineral sunscreens here at H&B, as well as a little more information to help you decide if they could be a good choice for you in this article. Skip to: This Nivea swim sunscreen was designed for children, babies and delicate skin. With SPF50+ protection, it dramatically reduces any risk of sun damage and works on both UVB and UVA rays. The cream is highly water-resistant and is wholly absorbed into the skin. A study in 2015, published in the journal Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology also affirms that both chemicals found in most sunscreens on the market can also induce feminization in adult male fish and cause reproductive diseases and neurological behavioural changes in them. What we need to understand is that fish are more than seafood! Fish are wildlife first, and they are critical components of complex marine ecosystems and food webs!

As surfers, we all understand the importance of protecting our skin against that unrelenting fireball in the sky called the sun. Not only do you need to apply the right sunscreen to protect your skin, but also you need to, as a surfer, think about one that won't run in your eyes, that will last in the water for a whole surf session, and endure all the elements thrown at it. Water Resistant and Reef Safe – Because we use only zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to combat harmful UV rays, our sunscreens don’t harm aquatic life like chemical sunscreens do. Always reapply after swimming. While chemical formulas tend to be a popular choice because they’re typically lighter in texture and easier to apply, mineral sunscreens are less likely to clog pores, making them better for sensitive, irritated and blemish-prone skin types. The bad news is that surfers are especially at risk due to the length of time we spend outdoors, with our skin exposed to the sun. The reflection of the water increases the chance of sunburn even further. A study carried out in 2015 found that surfers are three times more likely to develop skin cancer than the rest of the population. Octisalate Slightly less of a bad guy. Octisalate has still been linked to skin allergies and may have affects on the endocrine system (hormones again!!)

We have become so much more aware of the dangers of sun exposure. Cancer Research UK clarifies that the skin damage caused by UV rays causes DNA damage in our skin cells that can lead to cancer. Sun Cream That Considers The Sea - A reef safe sunscreen made for you. Ideal for normal to sensitive skin, this mineral sunscreen uses a premium Zinc Oxide, a gentle sun filter for you and the sea. NIVEA SUN Kids Swim Three friends founded Suntribe with love for both nature and outdoor pursuits. Their mission is to contribute to change within the sunscreen industry. They produce natural sunscreens which are 100% free from synthetic ingredients. The European Commission and FDA in the US have called for limitations on using some chemicals in sunscreens. Some of the chemicals may irritate sensitive skin. In particular, Oxybenzone has been found to act like oestrogen and cause sperm production and endometriosis problems. There are also some issues with damage to the environment that I will discuss more later. Mineral sunscreen

UVA and UVB ray protection – Both are important. All sunscreens are rated with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) followed by a number. The SPF reduces the amount of UVB (type B ultraviolet) rays that penetrate the skin. UVB rays cause cancer. Nivea is one of the world’s leading skincare brands with over 150 years of experience in the industry. Everyone needs to understand that even though you're far away from the ocean, you still have an impact on the environment, as all polluted water, from lakes to rivers, ends up in the ocean, as we all know! And if you think environmental health doesn't affect you directly, just remember that the oceans are closely linked to our health as well, providing half the oxygen we breathe, relaxation and enjoyment, jobs, and food to billions of people. And that's without talking about how closely related it is to climate change in general. In brief, we can all do a little bit more of an effort to make a difference on this planet and it can start with your sunscreen! After living in Taranaki, New Zealand, for the last 5 years (Taranaki being one of the regions where skin cancer has been proved to be extremely prevalent due to the very thin ozone layer) I had to find the best sun protection suitable for my needs, especially after noticing the effects of the sun on my poor 30 year old skin. A girl’s got to look after herself!
