Introduction to Icon Painting in Egg Tempera | Summer School - Leith School of Art - Edinburgh

The traditional art form of Christian icon-painting is currently enjoying a revival in Western Churches as well as the Orthodox Church.Following traditional approaches, students on this introductory course will work from an existing portrait-icon of their own choice, giving scope for personal creativity. Guided by practical demonstrations, students will learn how to make and use egg tempera as a painting medium. The group will practise drawing the forms with a fine-pointed brush, and learn how to build up layers of translucent colour for both the face and the areas of clothing. As well as these practical techniques, the course will include discussion of the visual language, symbolism and spiritual meaning of icons as ‘sacred portraits’. By the end of the week students will have completed an icon as well as a series of preparatory studies. No previous experience of icon-painting is required, but some drawing experience will be helpful.Introduction to Icon Painting in Egg TemperaTutor: Andrew PatersonFees: £365Days: Monday - Friday, 9:30am – 4:30pmLocation: North Junction St. CampusDates: 17 Aug - 21 Aug 2020 Classes begin at 9.30am and end at 4.30pm, with a break for lunch between 1.00pm and 2.00pm.
