About this deal

With emphasis on the change of language, Kern shows that the way language has been changed to make the act seem less as harmful and more beneficial to communities by using terminology in the vein of ‘urban renewal’ and ‘revitalization’ to name a few. In Gentrification Is Inevitable and Other Lies , Leslie Kern travels to Toronto, Vancouver, New York, London and Paris to look at how gentrification is killing our cities and what we can do about it. seemed to fall into the trap of “if the activism isn’t perfectly intersectional it’s not worth doing” at times, which i struggled with.

Too many references to other authors in the text made it at times a bit of a mash-up: other views could have been more often integrated more elegantly with a footnote referring to the authors. and i think it actually does tenant organizing a disservice to pretend as if these concepts are separate. Kern expounds on thinking before you consume, begging the question, what type of city do you want to live in: one only for the privileged, dripping in racist, ageist, misogynistic attitudes—vapid and shiny without a pulse? The final chapter explores these three frameworks in depth, offering actionable steps toward a more equitable urbanism that centers such concepts as infrastructures of care, Land Back movements, reparations, and environmental justice.

Beyond the Yoga studio, farmer's market and tattoo parlour, gentrification is more than a metaphor, but impacts the most vulnerable communities. Another reason I appreciate consistent reference to the work of others is it gives me other places to learn. A stunning visual celebration of the model for social housing, the Golden Lane Estate, with commissioned photography, illuminating architectural history of the building and fascinating interviews with residents of the Estate. But an all-encompassing gentrification model ultimately means nothing if it is impossible to define.Architects After Architecture reframes architecture as a uniquely versatile way of acting on the world, far beyond that of designing buildings. Gentrification Is Inevitable and Other Lies challenges a number of well-entrenched perspectives on gentrification from the anticapitalist left as well as the market-minded right. I also appreciate both that she acknowledges her privilege as a white woman and how this has affected her as well as ends the book with concrete actions to take to dispute these lies.
