About this deal

Every night and every day they turn fears, worries or bad moods into nice stories to enjoy together or alone. This can be a difficult concept, so don’t worry if it takes a few tries at this activity for them to ‘get’ it.

Now that you and your child have a name and an image of this awful worry monster, it is time to start putting the anxiety in its place! For the last few months, Shirley’s team have been creating the cuddly characters, which will be used by therapists and social workers to help children who have experienced developmental problems, abuse, neglect, bereavement, or trauma. Once the child is asleep or elsewhere, remove the note and the child will notice the monster has “eaten their worries”. The topic of externalizing a worry monster is detailed in the new book, Helping Children Manage Anxiety at School.

We are a team of teaching experts, who have worked as teachers, consultants, course-leaders, authors, and bloggers. Use it alongside our My Lockdown Experience worksheet to explore the experiences that your Early Level learners had during their time at home. It’s a good idea to use the worry monster pretty soon after the hunt for added motivation and engagement.

You can also use a jar, an envelope, or any container that serves the same purpose of storing worries away. We support parents, carers, schools, nurseries, therapists, clinics, teachers, charities and healthcare professionals.I can’t thank enough the dedicated volunteers who, in their own time, have createdthese wonderful characters; each one so different and individual. If your child is struggling in their day-to-day life with an unkind voice in their mind or a voice that is telling them to be afraid of everything, you can make a worry monster! Using the box and writing down your problems on paper also helps to turn something intangible into something they can actually touch, work with, and control.

They then put the piece of paper in the Worry Monster’s mouth, and the worry monster eats the problem up.Worry monsters can be used as a one-off experience, but they can also become part of your provision and revisited regularly. The children, at least when they get good at it, will each say a worry, and then place an object into the worry monster’s mouth.
