The Epilogue is where the book really shines in my opinion, and where all of the threads come together. All the elements that were supposedly some grand theme around “love” seemed more like a petty, gendered desire for being loved by an insecure neurotic. This book begins with a mundane but unsettling arrival which opens up into an increasingly fantastic tale of discovery and desire.

The book follows Thaw's wartime evacuation, secondary education and his scholarship to the Glasgow School of Art, where his inability to form relationships with women and his obsessive artistic vision lead to his descent into madness and eventual suicide by drowning. These elements amalgamate into a troubled and opaque whole, lacking any real pretence of cohesion; an entirely unique work, about as complex, original and ambitious as a novel can be. An adaptation of Lanark by Alastair Cording was staged by Glasgow's Tag Theatre Company at the Assembly Hall, Edinburgh, during the Edinburgh International Festival in August 1995.

The Institute he describes as a combination of Wyndham Lewis's conception of Hell in Malign Fiesta along with three real-life structures: the London Underground, Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow and BBC Television Centre in London. It's difficult to sympathize with him as he has few redeeming qualities, yet the story has an undeniable pathos. There are a few bits that I felt a bit frustrated with (in the fantasy parts) because I could not quite see the point of them, but I kept going through these even if I did skim read a tiny bit. One of the problems with the book is the growing suspicion that Gray just had a couple of mediocre novellas and tried to put them together with some stylistic fireworks to make one Big Novel.I will say though that the structure of the novel was superb - extremely well done and a very different way of reading. We then continue on in the world of Unthank with: Book Four, followed by an Epilogue, and then strangely… four additional chapters. The primary relationships are mostly hostile with such spotty affection and so one-sided in development that the only exposition about love that I saw is the main character’s desperate need to believe that he deserved it.
