A Streetcar Named Desire Screening! - Adam House, Basement Cinema room, The University of Edinburgh - Edinburgh

The Tennessee Williams play was adapted into this ground-breaking film in 1951 by Elia Kazan. Using beautiful black-and-white cinematography, breath-taking performances by the actors and an Oscar-nominated score, Kazan throws us into the heightened tensions of this hot, sticky New Orleans summer. We follow Blanche DuBois’ (Vivien Leigh) demise as she desperately attempts to maintain the illusions which ironically keep her somewhat sane, whilst the brutish Stanley (Marlon Brando) seeks to violently force reality upon her, and will not stop until his dominance is restored. ‘I’ve always depended on the kindness of strangers...’ sighs Blanche at the conclusion of the film, and the credits roll on what has since become a landmark of cinema.
