About this deal

She loved nothing more than visiting the 'flicks', having a tipple (or two) at the pub on the corner, or an evening at the music hall with her best friend Mrs Violet Butterfield. In all the years of her drab and humble existence, she’s never seen anything as magical as the dress before her and she’s never wanted anything as much before. Clothes here don't just bestow status or beauty, although that's certainly a crucial part of their function, but the right kind of visibility. I can never have enough of her' Justine Picardie 'It is almost impossible not to succumb to Gallico's spell' Times Literary Supplement 'Wherever she goes Mrs. stars because of the continued references to “the value of femininity” and “feminine” reactions/responses to things like dresses and flowers; as though there are no other words to describe womens’ emotions.

Well, this is the indomitable Mrs Harris we're talking about, even the Gods are totally enamoured by her! Always kind, always cheery and always winsome, the indomitable Mrs Harris takes Paris by storm and learns one of life’s greatest lessons along the way. If you attend an exclusive party in sweatpants, you will receive a different reception to that of the person wearing a formal gown.

There are lovely contrasts all the way through the story—between London and Paris but also between the glamour of Dior and the reality of the people who worked there. His novella titled The Snow Goose in 1941 rocketed him to the best-selling author list and many of his works have been adapted for motion pictures. She wins only ‘one hundred and two pounds, seven and ninepence halfpenny’, not enough for the dress, but after her initial disappointment she determines to scrimp and save until she can afford it.

In the film, they changed the storyline so that the help the charwoman brings about feels even more improbable. I didn’t find the charwoman’s personality nor accent as appealing as I did while listening to the audio. The complete 2018 Chichester Festival Theatre cast and orchestra reassembled over 3 days in July 2020 to record the score. for the first time Mrs Harris realised that she was leaving England behind her and was about to enter a foreign country, to be amongst foreign people who spoke a foreign language and who, for all she had ever heard about them, were immoral, grasping, ate snails and frogs, and were particularly inclined to crimes of passion and dismembered bodies in trunks. I have been itching to read the Mrs Harris books ever since Claire talked about them so wonderfully a few months ago. She enchants everyone she meets – and I mean that almost literally, in that she seems to be a fairy godmother, changing their lives for the better through Cockney wisdom and irrepressible optimism. Never in her life has Mrs Harris seen anything so beautiful and is completely and utterly enamoured.

Paul Gallico was born in New York City, of Italian and Austrian parentage, in 1897, and attended Columbia University. We all should learn to hold onto our dreams and earn the dress (things) we want even when it is beyond our wildest dreams! Then the three hero dresses are all inspired by Dior dresses but they’re interpretations and not copies. The first one I read, which remains easily my favourite (and is on my 50 Books list over in the right-hand column) was Love of Seven Dolls, which is very much the darkest of his books that I’ve read – but was still very certainly mixed with fairy-tale.Ein Kleid von Dior [ de] (1982) West German TV film starring Inge Meysel; followed by five more TV films based on Paul Gallico's novels.

Mrs Harris Goes to New York, in which Ada Harris and Violet Butterfield become the unlikely kidnappers of the young lad they hear being abused by his foster parents in the house next door to their London flats, has the same attractions.

Had found them to be warm and human, men and women for whom human love and understanding was a mainspring of life. I was feeling in the mood for something silly and light, and Gallico’s series is entirely reliable for that.
