Scott Shane's outstanding work Flee North tells the little-known tale of an unlikely partnership ... This Is Us' is extremely well written. The author has one of those writing style that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. She has a way of grabbing the reader's attention and draw them into what proves to be one hell of a read. For me, the story hit the ground running and maintained a steady pace throughout. Helen clearly cares about her characters and this shines through in the very vivid and realistic way in which she describes them. She makes her characters seem just as real as you and I. I found that I was that convinced by the story that I was going through every emotion that the different characters went through. It felt quite muddled and I think this was heightened by the three contrasting locations, making it read like a book of three parts. The two have an intense heart-to-heart in which many grievances are aired, Kevin admits that some of his jealousy issues were tied up with race, and Randall apologizes for saying that their dad was ashamed of Kevin. It will take time to fully heal, but this was a great, honest step forward.
