The second crevice tool is longer still and has a rubber section that telescopes out. This section is flexible, allowing you to bend the tool around corners and under low objects. On hard floors, the ball steering is precise and the machine never skids or slides. It does take a fair bit of force to tilt the cleaner into a turn – a little more so than Dyson’s own V-series, for example – yet not onerously so. The Light Ball aims to be all things to all cleaning duties. It combines the floor-cleaning gumption of an upright with the spot- and detail-cleaning flexibility of a cylinder. Simply pull the wand from the rear of the handle, attach the tool and off you go. While this basic Multi-Floor version is never going to cope with multi-pet homes, for a singular pooch or tabby it isn’t bad. For outstanding hard floor and excellent carpet cleaning from only 700W of power, we can’t think of any other cleaner that gets close. Verdict Despite this model not looking too much smaller than other Dyson models, it weighs far less. Under 7kg, in fact. In addition, the mass is low down in the ball, so it balances easily in the hand while carrying.The indents on the purple nut were just too small for my fingers, which made things a little awkward. This isn’t onerous, but these are unusual design hiccups for Dyson. The split in my home between hard floor and carpet is about half and half, and the Dyson Light Ball Multi Floor was a champion on both. Hard flooring was easier going than carpet, but the latter wasn’t too much effort and both were thoroughly clean after the Dyson Light Ball Multi Floor had worked on them. The brush bar default is on, but you can switch it off when you’re cleaning hard flooring or more delicate surfaces, so moving from one surface to another is no hassle. The stair tool got into the corners as well as across the treads and up the risers of my staircase. Attachments Yet getting down close and personal with the carpet pile revealed some heavier grains of powder left behind. Not at the edge, where you might expect, but the few inches into the room. Odd. Much crawling around examining the floor head in action ensued. There’s a simple slider control to change suction according to surface. I also liked the way the stabiliser automatically lifts up when the handle is reclined for use. Going up and down stairs? I found the handle on the Cyclone conveniently easy to grab and the slender shape brought the machine close to my leg to make carrying easy. How does it rate online? The Dyson Light Ball Multi Floor was easy on cupboard space and, unlike with a cylinder, you don’t have to accommodate the curve of a hose, so it’s neat once you’ve put it away. Manoeuvrability Issues come when using the detail tools. With no mini-motorised tool, grafting hairs from our stair carpet took a fair bit of elbow grease using the upholstery tool. You had to go over patches a few times to clear the area completely. They did clear though – which is more than some cleaner’s hand tools manage.

The easy-to-steer ball technology and instant-release wand with ridiculously stretchy hose are great. Add in the superbly lengthy 9.4m power cord and this Dyson offers outstanding cleaning reach. All the tools easily clip securely on and off and you even get a little on-board storage lug. Okay, so you can only store one tool here – but it’s still quite handy.
