About this deal

If you have the resources to buy a brand new car, you can be sure it will be equipped with the latest infotainment features such as voice command, gesture control, etc. And your brand new car will also have built-in Sat Nav that will notify you of the correct speeding zones and even speed camera detection. However, an OEM speed camera detector is most often an optional extra reserved for top-spec models. Usually at an exorbitant extra cost of course. Suffice to say, if you want built-in speed camera detection in your brand new car, it will always be an eye-watering expensive optional extra. Why pay all that extra money when you can buy speed camera detection technology for the fraction of the price and is also technically superior? And what if you are one of the many people who do not have the available means to buy a new car yet desire to beat those speed camera blues, thus negating the accumulation of fines and penalty points? We at MyCar Heaven were recently given the exciting opportunity to touch, test and enjoy the range of traffic alarms, courtesy of Saphe. We regularly enjoy reviewing car-related products, all whilst staying objective to the facts, features, and benefits.

The device switches on automatically when it senses motion, so usually, getting into your car is enough to wake it up, or closing your door will do it. The best speed camera detectors you can buy in 2023 1. Saphe Drive Mini Speed Camera Detector: Best-value speed camera detector

It can’t be helped as your phone is the one doing the monitoring of your location and sending the alerts through to the Saphe One+. You can also use the Saphe Link to show you your progress, like Google Maps, or show upcoming warnings. Which I don’t really get, as if you buy the Saphe One+, you’ll be alerted, so why do you also need to see the cameras on your phone? Set up couldn’t be simpler; build quality is great, and it’s easy to record a speed camera location with just a single button press of the ‘camera’ logo button on the right. In terms of our main matter here, it isn’t as easy to fit as some of the others, but the Aura speed trap database is good and it’s certainly not the most expensive. For European speed alerts a Here® database is included. The display is very clear (a green ring around your current speed if you’re not in trouble). The real question is the relative value of the device, even if you are looking for a dash-cam, and although the G-force is enough to turn on the dash-cam, the GPS can be a little slower to get the location right for the speed database.

What it can't do well at all however, as least in the UK, is mobile speed traps. It relies on other users pressing a button to record the location of a speed trap in much the same way that Waze relies on other Waze users to report them. The difference is that Waze has absolutely loads of users and Saphe seemingly has very few. So in reality Waze almost always knows about a mobile speed trap and Saphe almost never does. If only Saphe could tap in to Waze's data. You can use the Saphe Link app to give you either on-screen alerts to upcoming cameras or show you a map of your location as you drive. I’ve never used either, as the whole point in the Drive Mini is to do without needing to use your phone – well, for me it is anyway.I have asked Saphe about this data limitation via their support and they answered in about 36 hours. They replied; Key specs – Size: N/A; Cameras detected: Fixed and mobile, traffic light, average speed; Updates: Real time; Power source: N/A; Accessories supplied: N/A As its user base grows and continually report incidents to its databank, the alerts will continue to get better. You, on the other hand, will benefit massively from being left more informed of the things going on around you. It can keep your wallet happier from speeding fines, and you could spend more time outside of a jam. Saphe’s Drive Mini may even keep you out of getting into an accident, too.

Alert distance can be changed for the accident and congestion warnings, but the speed cameras can’t. The best thing about all the Saphe products is that there’s no ongoing subscription fee. Most other camera alert devices have monthly or yearly fees with them. It is a neat little unit that springs to life when the associated Bluetooth phone with companion app is in proximity. This means just by carrying my phone it will alert as a dedicated unit, vs using Waze I have to ensure the audio is set up correctly for the alerts and have my phone on display. The crisp display clearly shows the type of camera you’re approaching, your distance to it, plus the speed limit. Helpfully, it can also provide an early warning if you’re coming up to a broken-down car, accident or other dangers. Two buttons on the unit allow you to report an accident or a new camera location, and with Saphe’s claimed community of 11m users across Europe plus over-the-air (OTA) updates, it should provide excellent coverage.

Where can I get one?

We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the alarm not sounding at stationary cameras. We will investigate this issue to ensure that our device functions as intended. I’ve driven around for a few days, hastily seeking out speed cameras – which is quite a surreal experience, which I don’t think I’ll repeat again. I wanted to test how far in advance the alarm triggered prior to reaching the camera, and without getting scientific, the alarm seemed to consistently set off about 200 metres prior (when travelling at 30mph), and approx 400 metres when travelling on the motorway. I love how smart they were, so accounting for different speeds to ensure all drivers are given proportionate time to react and prepare.

In the UK, it’s perfectly legal to use a speed camera detector, although it’s a subject that often comes up for debate in Parliament. Nevertheless, while detectors – units that alert the driver to speed traps – can be used, radar jammers are strictly forbidden. Drivers using a jammer could be charged with perverting the course of justice, a crime that can carry a custodial sentence and/or a large fine. Can I use a speed camera detector abroad? Buy an air vent mount to avoid getting fined for using your phone handheld. If you need to talk on the phone, have a hands-free solution ready before you leave. You are welcome to use a mounted phone in your car. As smartphones become more sophisticated, the apps to help you avoid speed traps get better too. This means that separate devices become less necessary, but might be preferred by some drivers. On here, it can show you alerts for speed cameras (fixed and mobile), traffic, and possible incidents ahead like accidents. The addition of a screen means it can also show the speed limit for the upcoming camera; this can be handy if you haven’t been paying attention to the speed limits—Tut tut. A secondary mount is available to allow you to place it in between the air vents, The Saphe Drive Mini is small and compact enough not to be a distraction. Yet the buttons are large and therefore easy to access. And the notification graphics are easily readable and understandable. So how good is the Saphe Drive Mini speed camera detector? what does it give to you, the many? Below is a list of the Saphe Drive Mini’s many talents:

In terms of alerts on the One+, you get a flashing LED of different colours; blue is speed cameras, red is for an accident or danger ahead, while yellow flashes if there’s congestion or an accident. Since driving with the Saphe One+, I’ve felt more aware of my speed and that my licence is safer due to the fixed camera alerts. For the price, I think they’re well worth the money as most speed camera detectors have an ongoing cost associated with them. To help, we’ve broken down our review to some key areas that we feel would be important to drivers. Cruise control not only provides a more relaxing driving experience. It also helps you avoid speeding fines. If you do not use cruise control, you may, consciously or unconsciously, drive too fast. Come on Saphe, please speed up both this critical update and the time it takes to update other areas of your database (eg. the M4 Slough area average speed road works were removed weeks ago and yet the database is still claiming it’s 50mph when it’s not. Pretty annoying after 20minutes of false alerts...
