About this deal

The pictures are beautiful and are little novels in their own right whilst the humour works whatever age you are. We honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples' continuous connection to Country, waters, skies and communities. Look at the police officer’s map and give directions (in another language) to help people move from one place to another.

As well as the fun story and the lyrical verse, the numerous illustrations are excellent and an integral part of the story, make sure to keep your eye on them towards the end!If your mum was a cop and your dad was a crim who needed your help to commit a crime, would you do it to save him?

Not actually sympathetic organizations and that's important in stories like this if the reader is to root for the crooks.

Allan Ahlberg is one of the UK's most acclaimed and successful authors of children's books - including the best-selling Jolly Postman series. The great couple of children’s literature have previous with housebreaking; their Burglar Bill book is an undoubted classic. Here, the robberies are less complex -- their success largely depends on the fact that they're being carried out by cops, who can get away with things that other people couldn't -- and the ordinariness is presumably to encourage the reader to identify with the protagonists. The edition I read has this terrible front cover that makes the book out to be a farce rather than a “comic mystery” of its day.

Then i read it was written written expressly to be made into a movie and understood why it didnt have the usual Donald E. Fortunately, the robbers meet their match in brave Officer Pugh who leaps into action and arrests the villains – all except Grandma Swagg who manages to get away. Although the tone here is light hearted, there’s something real about this bunch of creeps in the night – we see them gleefully turn to violence when cornered. There's Grabber Dan, Snatcher Jack, "baby-faced Billy-the-Bag/Peg-leg Horace/Fingers Maurice/and villainous Grandma Swag. After finishing it you will be left wanting to read it again while singing to yourself, ‘Ho Ho for the robbers, The cops and the robbers Ho Ho! So he gets points for the ambience, but to be quite honest, that's not what I was hoping to get from this book: genuine humorists are rare enough that I'm always disappointed when one tries to be serious. Westlake creates impossible problems that leave you wondering how the protagonists are going to avoid the inevitable consequences, even though you know full well they will, as you have a hundred pages left to read.

I teach English as a foreign language here in France and thought what a wonderful teaching aid this would be. Westlake, however, casually dismisses this possibility, suggesting that our cop robbers will indeed get away with it. It's a little looser and goofier than Westlake's usual stuff, but it's still a heck of a lot of fun. But if the protagonists are aggressively ordinary -- their names are Tom and Joe -- it's an ordinariness that's very specific to its 30-year-old setting, including that setting's conception of ordinary working stiffs as white men with middle-class jobs (something that goes along with the above-mentioned casual racism).Tom and Joe also have badges, uniforms and guns, just like the rest of the New York City police force! The story is a heist caper, but this time it's being pulled of by a couple cops who have had enough of their job and the city and just want to get out. The robbers of London town plan a desperate crime one Christmas Eve - to steal all the toys they can lay their hands on! The story is accompanied by excellent illustrations which allow for children to make their own minds up about what is happening.
