There are fabulous 360 views from the summits of Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach, with the Snowdon massif to the southwest and the Carneddau and Anglesey to the north. If you enjoy climbing around on the big boulders it is possible to climb to the top of Castell y Gwynt, where fabulous views will await you. (Weather premitting obviously ;)) In addition to the standard four, six and ten-digit formats, you may also come across several other ways that National Grid references can be quoted. For example, the summit of Snowdon’s grid reference is ‘SH 609 543’, but this may also be referred to as: Description: Map sheet number 81 in the OS Landranger map series covers an area of the Northumberland National park as far as Sharperton in the east and the Northumbrian coastline from just south of Blyth to Craster.

Whilst, as the highest mountain in Wales, Snowdon attracts most of the visitors in the Snowdonia mountains, the neighbouring peaks in the Glyderau range offer a more unique experience. To be sure there is no doubt or confusion about which National Grid you’re referring, when you quote the six-figure grid reference you should put the two letters of the area you are in before the numbers. Plan your route carefully before you set off by choosing a route that suits the fitness level of everybody in your group, not just your own. We recommend the Llanberis path if this is your first time climbing Snowdon. Reaching the summit is only half the battle so be vigilant as you descend the mountain, as you will become tired and are more likely to slip or trip at this point. Skirt around the right side of Castell y Gwynt before clambering up a bouldery path to the summit. From here it’s just a short walk onto the summit of Glyder Fach, with the Cantilever Stone just beyond. An easy way to remember this is that to get the first number, you go along the corridor (horizontal, x axis, eastings) and then up the stairs (vertical, y axis, northings). The Glyderau (not the Glyders!) are a group of mountains that get their name from the two highest peaks in the group – Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach. Hiking onto the Glyderau via the Devil’s Kitchen is one of the classic hikes in Eryri. In practice, it’s the six-digit grid reference number that is most commonly used, although the more digits used gives you a more precise location. GPS devices often specify at least eight-digit grid reference numbers. Four-figure grid references Most paths start in the Ogwen Valley however there are other routes originating in Capel Curig, Pen y Pass and Nant peris. In this post I wanted to share 6 of the best Glyderau walking routes and provide some inspiration for your next mountain adventure!

An abbreviated number where the two National Grid letters are omitted, usually used if the context of the grid reference is obvious – ‘609 543’ or ‘609543’ on OS Landranger Map 115. People may also use this style to quote a reference for a place that is local to you. As well as having epic mountain walks, Snowdonia is also blessed with beautiful waterfall walks. Discover the prettiest ones in this post! 3. Cwm Bochlwyd Horseshoe (Tryfan & Glyder Fach Scramble) You may find a variety of terms used to describe National Grid references, such as ‘OS grid ref’, ‘grid reference’, ‘OS map ref’ or simply just ‘map reference’. While the correct term for these is ‘National Grid reference’, these terms all mean the same thing; however, as we’ll see, grid references can be given in a number of different formats. The National Grid Description: Map sheet number 197 in the OS Landranger series is the ideal map to use when planning a trip to the Chichester and South Downs area. The area has much to offer visitors including stunning sand dunes, historical buildings and rolling hills. From the lay-by make your way to the edge of Llyn Dinas and follow it around to the right. Take the stone footpath up the hill, towards the pass. At the top of the climb you are rewarded with views of the Snowdon massif to the north and Moel Siabod to the northeast.
