About this deal

If you like character-oriented novels, don’t mind (or can skip over) triggering scenes, and have no problem with multiple perspectives or magical realism, do give this a try. Sydney wears the kind of expression that says she’s trying hard to act serious, but a smile makes the corners of her lips twitch. Filled with empathy, insight, and humor, The Giftcaptures the vulnerability and common challenges we all face and provides encouragement and advice for breaking out of our personal prisons to find healing and enjoy life.

The plot only got its oomph at 70% and even then, it fizzled out again towards the floppiest of conclusions.October 1840 and a young woman is wandering in a Shropshire forest gripped with sadness over the death of her canine companion. Jeez, Miss, if you wanted to hold my hand so badly, you should have just said so from the beginning. Clasping my hands in front of my waist, I watch Missy set up the Ouija board while everyone else laughs and clowns around. The Gifts is an astonishing novel, a spellbinding tale told through five different perspectives and set against the luminous backdrop of nineteenth century London, it explores science, nature and religion, enlightenment, the role of women in society and the dark danger of ambition. Will these women be able to stand up to such scrutiny from both the outside world and this man who cannot help but be drawn to such heavenly beings?

Love, an African American photographer who moved to Brazil in the 60s, was one of the great underrated photographers and most of his work is out of print. The story tackled diffrent themes such as race, mental health, relegious zele, women's rights, scientific obessession, etc. But when it comes to Luka Williams, a reluctantly popular boy in her class, she’s unused to a stare that intense.

A book can make a great gift strictly because of the content—you will be thrilled, for various reasons, reading David Grann’s The Wager or Mark Masters’ High Bias: The Distorted History of the Cassette Tape. Eger explains that the worst prison she experienced is not the prison that Nazis put her in but the one she created for herself, the prison within her own mind. A budding botanist, Etta spends her days tramping over the Shropshire countryside classifying and sketching plants. The exhibition (and this accompanying monograph) offer a different side of O’Keeffe than is commonly known.

I loved it, and although my proof copy just had placeholder text, I’m sure that the finished copy with its chapter illustrations will be a thing of beauty indeed. While a couple of these scenes might have been essential to detail the nature of that specific character, the rest felt forced in. I tell myself I will never, ever fit in if I can’t do a stupid séance with a group of teenagers on a Parker Brothers Ouija board. Each of the five is assigned a symbol that appears as a small drawing at the start of their sections. I’m very selective about who’s going to get my anger, because when I’m angry, I’m the one who suffers.

I’m rating it a little lower because it wasn’t until almost 65% through that I was finally able to connect to the story and characters. The recipes are clear, sensible, and easy-to-follow in the ATK tradition, but Kevin Pang’s self-deprecating and welcoming voice, as well as his intelligence, make this book better than most. This is a beautifully written novel that blends several different genres- historical fiction, mystery, literary fiction, with a little fantasy thown in. This year I’m really excited to give Rebecca May Johnson’s Small Fires: An Epic in the Kitchen (Pushkin Press) to family and friends. The Golden Age of NYC Mixtapesstands out for hardcore fan;, LL Cool J Presents The Streets Winis a good pick for a casual coffee table book.
