About this deal

Thank you for all your wonderful work. It helped me win one of our PGA section tournaments (a major) last year. Look forward to receiving your e-book on focus and concentration!” I also found his writing to be very patronizing, as though it assumes the reader is dumb and incompetent. His philosophy for improving the mental aspect of the game is very interesting, but the manner in which he writes about it feels as though he talks down to the reader. No doubt everyone has room for improvement, but Rotella believes the reader has no conception of how to "properly" play. I believe people learn more when they feel respected.

With focus and concentration, you can step onto the golf course and turn what was once nervous energy into adrenaline. Robert J Rotella (Dr. Bob Rotella) is a renowned psychologist and best-selling author who teaches students around the world how to use their minds to reach their potential. He is consistently recognised as one of world’s finest sports psychologists, and works predominantly with professional golfers from around the world. By helping these golfers to harness the potential of their mind and to control their emotions, he has helped coach and train many top golfers to win in excess of 75 major trophies. To score consistently, a golfer must think consistently. A sound, consistent pre-shot rou There is a section where Rotella specifically talks about how socioeconomic class and other factors should not be used as excuses for the level of golf skill, and that it is the mentality that truly matters. I agree with this to a degree, but in my experience, golf is predominantly filled with wealthy white people, and that is for a reason. Golf is such an expensive sport to play, and there are still so many unsaid barriers that prevent diversity. To disregard these societal factors is extremely concerning to me, especially considering that they play an important role in shaping an individual's mentality to begin with. Golf has become much more competitive and systemized since this book was written, so every advantage a player has matters. There are also times when Rotella slips into using exclusively male pronouns when describing general players, which I found to be disappointing.PDF / EPUB File Name: Golf_is_Not_a_Game_of_Perfect_-_Bob_Rotella.pdf, Golf_is_Not_a_Game_of_Perfect_-_Bob_Rotella.epub Confidence is crucial to good golf. Confidence is simply the aggregate of the thoughts you have about yourself. A few years ago I was down at the Austin Country Club working with Tom the week before the Tournament of Champions. He had to go inside to take a phone call, and while I waited for him to return, a tall, athletic-looking man walked up to me and introduced myself. This is useful for people who want to get to the core points at hand in a simple and straightforward way. The book is written in a conversational format, meaning it will be easier to understand than overly formal books filled with overcomplicated technical jargon.

Some aspects of the game of golf have changed since Rotella's book was published in 1995, but many have remained exactly the same. Therefore, the vast majority of the advice in this novel is extremely relevant. He has fulfilled those dreams. Now he has new ones. Two days after he won the U.S. Open for the first time, he called me up. He knew what would happen when he returned to the Tour. Everyone he met would want to congratulate him. Reporters would want to interview him about the Open. Fans would mob him. Faced with those distractions, a lot of new Open champions have suffered letdowns. Tom was determined not to be one of them He wanted to test his self-discipline. He wanted to be a player who used the Open as a springboard to even better performance. And he did. On the ohter hand, a player with no dreams has little real potential. Not too long ago, a young man from another university came to Charlottesville to see me, looking for help with his golf game. I asked him what his dreams were.Ch 3 stresses that fear of failure on the course — not trust & confidence — causes one to think about the mechanics of the swing instead of being fluid and natural. That reduces consistent shotmaking. Only train the swing mechanics during practice, then trust it on the course. Focus on targets and strategy, and forget correcting flaws & mechanics. Envision the desired shot, and trust the body to deliver. Your pre-shot routine is very important. He suggests: (Choose) Club, Target, Stance, Visualise, Grip, Practice, Waggle, Look at the target then at the ball.

The dreams I want to hear of excite some fortunate people from the time they wake up each morning until they fall asleep at night. They are the stuff of passion and tenacity. They might be defined as goals, but goals so bright that no one need write them down to remember them. In fact, the hard task for the professionals I work with is not recalling their dreams, but occasionally putting them out of their minds and taking some time off from their pursuit of them. The dreams I want to hear about are the emotional fuel that helps people take control of their lives and be what they want to be. Time and again, I have heard stories of dreams that are intimately connected to the ability to play great golf. In fact, this is the first mental principle a golfer must learn: She sat on my couch and said, "I'm past thirty. I want to win more. I want to win majors. I want to be Player of the Year at least once. And I want to be in the LPGA Hall of Fame." This book uses countless stories from Dr. Rotella’s career of not only helping golfers of varying degrees of skill including to professionals like Tom Kite but other athletes like college basketball players. I really enjoyed his style of working on mental focus versus swing mechanics. This will alter the players approach to the game and results. Dr. Rotella advises:

Introduction

Accept that “ golf is not a game of perfect” as Bob Rotella says. “Calm, relaxed, focused” should be your mantra. Your reaction affects your current action and your future satisfaction. Another interesting function of the human mind is its ability to complete actions without precise computation. In fact, the best athletes in the world rely mostly on feel and heuristics. Rotella recognises this in emphasising the need to disconnect the mind when hitting a shot. This means establishing specific mechanics beforehand, but not focusing on them during. Consistency is also supported by routines. Appendix of this book is a list of rules Dr. Rotella has devised to help golfers. These could be considered observations, affirmations, or inspiration quotes. Here are just a few: A golfer cannot let the first few holes, shots, or putts determine his thinking for the rest of the round. A golfer should strive to be looser, freer, and more confident with every hole. This will combat the tendency to get tighter, more careful, and more doubtful.

Another quote I really liked was “A golfer can and must decide how he will think.”- Dr. Bob Rotella pg 36. The reason I read this book was to try to get valuable information out of it on how to control my emotions on the golf course. This quote helps me realize that my emotions and the way I act is a choice made by me. It also made me think about how golf isn't that big of a dead, it's not a life or death situation. For me to get so upset about me not playing to my expectations isn't right because at the end of the day, it's just a game. A person with small dreams, or a person without the confidence to pursue his or her dreams, has consigned himself or herself to a life of frustration and mediocrity. It is more important to be decisive than to be correct when preparing to play any golf shot or putt. Freud believed dreams were a window into the subconscious mind. From them, he spun a web of theory that, too often, boils down to a belief that people are the victims of circumstances beyond their control -- of childhood traumas, parental mistakes, and instinctive impulses. I don’t care what you do. Half the world is going to love you, the other half is going to hate you, but at least they’ll all be talking about you.
