About this deal

The snowbound Antarctic setting is wonderfully claustrophobic, and blisteringly oppressive, whilst Carpenter-esque synth-driven score actually works for once (mainly because it was actually done by the great Ennio Morricone, with Carpenter 'supervising'), giving the film its own eerie heartbeat. Black levels are strong, and hold up to scrutiny, with fine shadow detail and no signs of crush; indeed no signs of any overt defects, digital or otherwise. Because this release contains features found on the other releases, I will not be covering them again. They might not always look perfectly realistic, but the forms the creature shifts into are so warped and freakishly unusual this doesn’t matter. This is when Stevie wonders superstition is playing on the radio and the camera travels low as if an alien creeping through the station.

Few horror films were this overtly extreme back then and certainly none so realistic-looking, so it was likely too shocking for mainstream movie-goers. If anyone was thinking that this featurette would be like the Hallowed Grounds featurettes that Sean Clarke does then you are sorely mistaken.Everyone involved has great stories to tell, especially when it comes to how they came up with their characters and their interactions with each other.

When "The Thing" breaks out of the ice block and breaks through the ceiling onto the roof, you can hear the beast scramble across the tin as if it was your own rinky-dink roof. A dog’s head peels open like a banana, a chest cavity opens up to reveal teeth, a man’s head separates from its body and then grows legs and walks away like a spider, etc. I still think that the Scream Factory disc looks good, but more as an alternative or a comparison piece than anything else. There is a beating heart effect played on a bass that’s not unlike other horror films especially its contemporaries. The filmmakers knew that they had a daunting and seemingly impossible task at hand – following up one of the most beloved horror movies of all time – so they describe the "reverse engineering" "story by autopsy" method they applied while writing it. Like, The Thing--in its most authentic form--comes from your worn-out VHS tape or a 3 AM broadcast on cable TV.

The Blu-ray is full of deleted and extended scenes and in-depth looks at the making of the film via commentary, picture-in-picture main feature vignettes and and short featurettes. Performances are solid too, with a handful of character actors making up a wonderful ensemble cast, with the ever reliable and charismatic Kurt Russell heading the bill. But for all its many virtues (and believe me, I do think it’s a great movie), Alien is still just folks being hunted by a monster. Film Historians Nathaniel Tompson, John Kenneth Muir, and Anthony Taylor take a look at the summer of 1982, which saw the release of many films that would go on to become either classics or cult classics. These aren’t really outtakes as we have come to know, but scenes that were added to the broadcast version of the film. Sure there were fans of the film before that, but the laserdisc is often cited as the major turning point for the film. Arrow thanks to scans of the original negative could deliver a more filmlike presentation, and they’re definitely better at handling remasters/restorations. Arrow deliver The Thing on a Region B-locked UK Blu-ray complete with a very impressive looking 1080p/AVC-encoded High Definition video presentation framed in the film's original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.

Inside, we have two essays, Some Thing Wicked This Way Comes by Violet Lucca, and In Defense of John Carpenter's The Thing by Kevin Alexander Boon.

After the destruction of the Norwegian chopper, the members of the US team fly to the Norwegian base, only to discover them all dead or missing. We then have an interview with David Lewis Yewdall, who was the supervising sound editor on the film. But the good news is that Carpenter and Cundey use so few optical transitions that everything is crisp and wonderfully clean looking.
