About this deal

Thank you to Rebecca Wilkinson for leading her focus group at the 2018 AATA Conference on this topic and sharing some great thoughts on why art therapists should consider using coloring books. Carolyn Mehlomakulu, LMFT-S, ATR-BC is an art therapist in Austin, Texas who works with children, teens, and families. Coloring and making art can be soothing, allow for self-expression, and feel therapeutic, but when they are done on your own they fall into the realm of self-care and coping, not therapy. Still, she makes a distinction between the books and therapy: “I don’t consider the coloring books as art therapy; I consider the coloring books therapeutic, which is not the same thing.

However unlike the first Art Therapy colouring book, this doesn’t happen on most pictures now as it’s usually the background that’s coloured in. They tend to be more finicky — lots of little sections to pen in, rather than big areas to colour — which may or may not suit you. As a tool to explore process – In art therapy, exploring the art-making process is often more important that the content. Not the easiest to colour in with it on your lap whilst watching television (although I manage some how). The colouring section covers the first third to three-quarters of the book and is filled with a variety of different things to colour in. And that’s the beauty of Calming Art Therapy Colouring Book – it would make a fantastic gift for anyone, but now more than ever.

There are lots of swirling lines, geometric patterns and abstract shapes but in equal measure there are captivating animals, flowers and scenes all stylised and just begging to be coloured. It really is fantastic for all of you anxious colourers out there who agonise about colours and often feel increased tension at the sight of a blank white page with black lines on. I’ve been considering offering coloring pages as a coping tool for the elementary aged children I see. On the other hand, sometimes it’s nice to just colour something in differently, and see what it looks like as a complete picture — you might consider the already coloured parts of the pictures to be a sort of challenge to get really creative! It’s an A4 book with really thick unbendable card on the front and back cover (also available in paperback) which serves as a great surface to colour on if you’re like me and don’t like to colour at a table, and stops your book getting damaged with bendy covers and bashed corners.

This book stopped me being able to do that and really freed up my imagination so that I felt able to add orange and purple to an owl, green to buildings, and bright blue to the chameleon. I really can’t recommend this book highly enough and strongly urge you to purchase a copy just as soon as you can because it does exactly what it says it’ll do on the cover – Uses your creativity to de-stress and provides Art Therapy – What more could you want? Therapists may also want to explore with clients what thoughts and feelings lead to their choice of doing coloring pages instead of original art.Shannon Bennett, an assistant professor of psychology in psychiatry at New York’s Weill Cornell Medical College, says that “it’s not something that would be a go-to for me”. The fifth title in the hugely successful Art Therapy series, this book would make a gorgeous gift for anyone who wants to de-stress with colouring.

This year, there have been several really good studies about why people should engage in creative activity, which doesn’t involve coloring in someone else’s designs,” she said, citing a study that was released by the Mayo Clinic this spring. My acceptance and appreciation of the role of coloring has come about through small steps over the past few years. The instructions are very clear for each of the activities and there's a lot of content shared making it a great value. I was given a copy of this colouring book, Art Therapy, for Christmas a couple of years ago, before they became the latest craze. The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal.
