About this deal

Several are from the BBC’s own archives and include Ferrier’s first broadcast of Rubbra’s Three Psalms Op. Finest of all, I think, are the Vier ernste Gesänge, the voice at its most sumptuous and utterly right for the songs, the style having noble breadth and authority as well as keeping compassionate personal contact. You must take reasonable care to ensure that an item is repackaged so that it arrives back in the same condition it was despatched.

Ferrier was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1951, just as her career was reaching its peak; she continued to perform whilst receiving treatment (despite almost collapsing during a performance of Orfeo in the final months of her life), but died aged just 41 on 8th October 1953. Her singing was of such rare beauty: beauty of expression, beauty of voice, purity, and beauty of personality.

Ferrier excelled in oratorio and song-repertoire (not a natural actress, she took on comparatively few operatic roles, but created the title-role in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia at Glyndebourne in 1946 and won considerable acclaim for Gluck’s Orfeo at the same house the following year); her recordings of folk-songs such as ‘Blow the wind southerly’ and ‘Down by the Salley Gardens’, the arias from Bach’s Passions and Christmas Oratorio, and especially Mahler’s orchestral songs and Das Lied von der Erdewith Bruno Walter and the Wiener Philharmoniker have achieved legendary status. Testament LP's are cut onto lacquer from the original master tapes at Abbey Road Studios using full analogue techniques throughout production an pressed onto 180g virgin vinyl. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. A rarity in Ferrier’s repertoire – she had sung it only once before and was never to again – the Magnificat was a work the much-loved singer felt a close affinity with, joyfully declaring: “Oh! Her career took off following an introduction to Sir Malcolm Sargent, with whom she would later work on a regular basis; early successes included Handel’s Messiah at Westminster Abbey and The Angel in Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius in Leeds, and by the mid-1940s she was signed to Decca Records.

In honor of the centennial of her birth, EMI has released her complete recordings on the label in a three-disc set, an impressive showcase of her artistry in trademark works of Bach, Gluck, Handel and Mahler. Four years before Bruno Walter’s celebrated, indeed classic Vienna recording (1952) with Kathleen Ferrier, the man who conducted the world premiere of Mahler’s pantheistic symphony with voices takes his newest discovery from the Edinburgh Festival to America, there to share her extraordinary kinship with the piece at New York’s Carnegie Hall. Ferrier’s accompanists on this CD are three of her friends and valued collaborators –Bruno Walter, Gerald Moore and Frederick Stone. It was a considerable honour for Ferrier to be invited… what was quite astonishing was that of all the 15 soloists taking part [she] was the only non-native German speaker. It’s in excellent sound… This is an important addition to Ferrier’s legacy on disc… This disc is warmly commended for sourcing and restoring the Magnificat, which will be of interest to all Ferrier enthusiasts and also, incidentally, to those for whom appreciation of Andreae as a conductor has hitherto been limited to Bruckner. In addition there are eight treasurable items from a 1949 Norwegian Radio recital in Oslo, which include her only published recordings of Hugo Wolf. The Very Best of Kathleen Ferrier Composer Hubert Hughes, Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frideric Handel, Felix Mendelssohn, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Roger Quilter, Gustav Mahler, Christoph Willibald Gluck Format:CD.
