About this deal

The FuelCell Rebel 2 running shoe probably won't help you shave much time, if any, off your personal records, and yet, this shoe can handle most of what you throw at it. It's a perfect all-around option to lace up several times a week for various paces and skill levels. Should You Buy the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2? The upper clearly is airy and far less dense than the TC or RC. As a heel striker at slower paces I feared the soft soft foam would be overly soft, out of control, or bottom out so I initially didn’t request a sample but hearing early comments from the team had to try them! I was not disappointed! This new version weighs 7.4 oz (211g) in US size 9, so the Rebel v3 remains an extremely lightweight shoe compared to the average of road running shoes, which is 9.5 oz (270g). New Balance Rebel v3 doesn’t c ost you a fortune This is due to the lateral “wing” which flares out at the midfoot and forefoot and pushes your foot inward. This “wing” is not as prominent as on the Rebel V1 but it still results in medial side lean bias.

Jacob: Fuel Cell is the name of the game here and I’m a big fan—it’s a single-slab of soft, flexible, bouncy, and energetic foam. This deployment of FuelCell minds me of the Propel v1 in it’s dramatically soft and flexible feel. There is a balanced level of cushion and foam in the Rebel v2 where it’s not tippy at the heel or sink-in-forever feeling like the TC so there is more stability and direct connection with the ground on toe-off. The forefoot has some firmness. However, it is well-cushioned and not harsh. Sam: The others have described the midsole well. Call it FuelCell Unleashed! The foam itself is an EVA/TPU blend that is autoclaved to reduce its density and thus its weight (say compared to the similar softness but considerably heavier TC) while retaining its rebound or energy “return”. The only other current New Balance with this type of FuelCell foam is the RC Elite. David: "The midsole cushioning absorbs most of the ground feel, and the redesigned outsole takes care of the rest. I would feel comfortable taking these up to a half-marathon distance (or even farther) without any issues." I get it. You have the first version of the Rebel in your rotation. Maybe you love it, and you’re on your third pair. Or perhaps it wasn’t to your liking, and it’s mostly collecting dust. On the other hand, doing an easy 5-mile run at a purposefully casual pace was joyous. There were no aches in my feet, no prodding from the upper or any kind of discomfort to speak of. While these aren't plush recovery run shoes, they definitely lean slightly more toward the slower and steady pace. For any runs over five miles when speed isn't the goal, my eyes always glance at these New Balance shoes as ones to use.

The Rebel v3 is also comfortable enough for most easy runs. The one exception for me was a recovery run the day after a particularly long run, when I found that it didn’t provide enough protection for tired legs – I’d rather be in a max-cushioned shoe like the New Balance More v4 to shuffle through those runs. The midsole sidewalls are raised at the midfoot to provide some stability but I still think that heel strikers will find the Rebel v2 slightly unstable.

At 400 miles so far I feel like I could take yet further which is very rare for a shoe in this kind of weight category. I have to say, I’m super impressed with the durability and how soft these feel even after long term use on the pavement. Sally: My first impression was WOW! Right out of the box, a great looking shoe with an eye-popping colorway. But the real wow factor came after trying the shoe on: true to size, accommodating toe box, flexible, but oh so soft and bouncy feeling.

Safe to say, the Rebel v2 doesn’t disappoint in this regard. Despite a softer midsole compound than its predecessor, it somehow feels both faster and more responsive to the effort you put in. Such is the beauty of NB’s perfected FuelCell formulation. Unsuited for the Unstable As someone who loves the bouncy foams of carbon plated super shoes, the Rebel V2 combines that trampoline like propulsion with a sublime upper and a simple yet flashy colorway. The foam is super soft, but rather than dissipating your energy, it rebounds it. The only downside of the soft foam is a little bit less stability and durability but for paved roads, this is an excellent shoe for all paces. Fit is true to size (M11). Apart from some slight tearing on the medial side of the upper, which could be because of wear and tear and also might be from of the salt on city streets eating away at the mesh. Ryan : I take the consensus view here, that this flexible yet sturdy material is both comfortable and breathable. A unique feature is the shoe’s asymmetric lacing, which neither hurt nor helped in any meaningful way. David: "I absolutely love the Rebel's FuelCell midsole. I thought the Rebel v2s were really fun to run in, and I always wanted to push the pace when they were on foot."The FuelCell Rebel v2 are roomy, lightweight and have a bouncy midsole foam—all combined, they elicit enthusiasm for running that few shoes do. While they may not be perfect in every way, they're fun. Did you know running shoes could be fun? First Impressions Since then, in line with evolving preferences of the public, FuelCell shoes have become progressively softer in feel, moving from the FC Impulse in 2018 (still pretty firm) to the FC Rebel and Propel in 2019 (much softer and almost bouncy), and finally to the FC TC and RC Elite which are positively trampoline-like. All these shoes use the generic FuelCell moniker but I strongly suspect the base compounds in the foam are no longer TPU-based. Like most things running-related, the PF soreness isn’t persistent and will go away once the body adapts to the unstructured midsole.
