About this deal

With greenhouse cucumbers – insert a tall, sturdy bamboo cane up to the greenhouse roof, or attach a vertical wire or string from the roof, secured at ground level. This can increase the amount of water and nutrients available to each tomato plant, and therefore increase your tomato crop. Broad beans and peas can be planted to overwinter, then transplant them when clay soils are easier to work with in the early spring. This shape is ideal for growing your crops in rows, similar to a raised garden bed, but with improved drainage and airflow.

Fill small pots with multi-purpose compost and water well, then make a hole in the centre of each with a dibber or blunt stick. They’ve taken the classic design and added a “harvest window” to allow you access to the roots without the hassle of digging. Most varieties form quite large plants over the course of the summer, needing at least a square metre/yard of ground space. After about a month, they should be ready to plant into their final position, as soon as the first flowers open. Just cut the bottom of an old 8/9” plant pot and place it a few inches into the grow bag – just cut more of the bag away t make space.

It is wise to take both the size of the bag and the type of plants you want to grow into consideration before purchasing your grow bags. Generally used for larger vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers, growing-bags can also be used for a quick-maturing salad crop or for a ready supply of cut-and-come-again herbs and salad leaves. A plant that is restricted by pruning to usually one main stem, either upright or at a 45 degree angle, with short fruiting side-shoots (spurs). We grow them in a greenhouse, where they're trained up wires, and we remove sideshoots below the fruit.

You can either plant the tomatoes directly into the growing bag, or you can try using a growing ring to increase the amount of compost the roots sit in. For warmth-loving okra and cucumbers, vents can be kept closed but humidity must be raised by damping down. Each bag is labeled with the size in gallons so that you can quickly grab the right size out of storage without having to unfold each one. Fill 10cm (4in) pots with seed compost, water well, then sow one seed in the centre of each, 1–2cm (½–¾in) deep. The rugged handles are sewn on with serger stitches to ensure they’re strong enough to support a full grow bag of soil. Retaining moisture is one of the issues some people have when planting in grow bags and this mixture will solve that problem for you. If using a vertical string, gently wind the string around the top of the main stem once or twice a week as it grows.

They can be frozen, ideally after blanching in boiling water, which helps to preserve their colour and texture. Tomato grow bags make the perfect, easy growing medium for greenhouse tomatoes and outdoor tomatoes. They grow particularly well in a greenhouse, usually producing an earlier and larger crop than plants outdoors.
