About this deal

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The cover art is a pastiche of the artwork used on various Sound Effects records produced by the BBC during the 1970s. Sound Affects was originally released in November 1980 at a time when The Jam was considered the biggest band in Britain.

From my readings, they will make a vinyl record out of anything - your pubescent brother's farts recorded on a Maxwell cassette can be made into an "180-gram audiophile record". The back cover of the album features an excerpt from Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem The Masque of Anarchy. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. I've read stories of crackly, skipping, dust-ridden, fingerprint-ridden slabs of junk leaving this pressing plant. The vinyl was one of the very first ones in my collection, after kids records and the obligatory Electric Light Orchestra, Sweet, and - lo and behold - Public Image, Ltd. Though many are only of minor interest to me, it's nice to have all of it collected in this one package for any future interest. Tellingly, when Weller came to record 2010’s Wake Up The Nation, it was Sound Affects that his collaborator and producer Simon Dine held up as a model. That was the sort of sound he imagined we should be going for: hard, metallic, quite stripped-down… jagged.

Of the countless songs about working class British life released in the last three decades, it’s strange one so ostensibly slight is so breathtaking. I doubt it - those 38-year old magnetic tapes were sourced and sent to the Czech Republic to cut a lacquer? I am unfamiliar with any previous release that may have been remastered by him but if this is the kind of quality that comes as a result, Universal mastering should hire him to remaster the entire back catalog of the Siouxsie and the Banshees botched remasters. One of the most popular bands to emerge from the English punk rock scene of 1977; The Jam had a phenomenal impact on pop music and wider youth culture. No trace of that here: he is furious, and seems to run forward, dragging the other players with him, towards the ballot box, and they can hardly keep pace. The social commentary was lost to me for a while - I was after the beat and aggression - but it did not take long to get the message. It may just be a list of simple things we’ve all done, seen or heard, with an ironic chorus, acoustic guitars and no drums, but so what?

I rotate what I own, always adding or taking away a spice from the sauce - or simply give them away for the youngins' to enjoy. I'm 55 and have been enjoying this absolute gem of a record since it was released in my graduating year of high school in 1980. Based on a compilation I purchased, I avoided the early punk albums and started with the `Setting Sons' album.BirdsEye fish fingers, Heinz baked beans and chips (from the chip pan, slightly overdone), accompanied by a mug of tea and served on a wobbly wooden coffee table to a backdrop of a Grundig Colour TV showing the end credits of "The Changes" (hence the pylon reference)? Pretty Green is so good listeners don’t even notice it hasn’t got a chorus, just tense verses and a power-chord pre-chorus that disperses like spilt beer across a bar floor. As a nice change to some of my other (audio) critical reviews, I'm pleased to finish this by saying, well done Universal Music. Noted musical influences on Sound Affects include post-punk groups such as Wire, Gang of Four, and Joy Division and, particularly evident in Rick Buckler's drumming, Michael Jackson's Off the Wall. At the time of its release, he said that he considered the album a cross between Off the Wall and Revolver.

A little disappointing that no 3rd disc was included to really tempt the fans - this could either have been a live disc from the legendary Newcastle City Hall gig (28/10/10) or a DVD of the complete German Rockpalast TV broadcast (30/11/80) - on both occasions, the band were at their un-stoppable best. Buckler's drumming suddenly has a ferocity that I never noticed before in a dozen previous versions of this record. Got this on vinyl as soon as I heard it was out in 1980, it reflects a more expansive and confident band, using horn section, backward tapes and heavy on the Rickenbacker approaches, that give the the whole set a swagger as it paces about the room with assured self belief a plenty.Reading texts on Paul Weller afterwards have made it even easier to grasp the meaning of these lyrics.
