We borrowed it from the library and will be picking up a copy of our own soon as we can't bear to part with it! Vivian French's colourful book Oliver's Vegetables is a fantastic story to read aloud with your class. Continue your discussion of Oliver’s Vegetables by asking why his grandparents wanted him to eat his vegetables? If possible, use the vegetables from the Exploration to create a plant parts salad for the students to enjoy at school, too. We have enjoyed printing with vegetables and paint to create beautiful pictures, as well as scrubbing and washing vegetables in preparation to make vegetable soup.

This book doesn't try to hide it's purpose, but it is beautiful and clever and so worth reading with a picky eater in your family. We have been learning all about healthy and unhealthy foods, and about the importance of a healthy and balanced diet.

I really liked the story, the way the days of the week are worked in, the way Oliver opens up to trying new things to eat, and even the little inside joke at the end between him and his grandparents. The following is an overview of common plant parts divided into two categories: vegetative and reproductive. Slightly on the minus side - speaking only as an adult here - I used to feel slightly riled by the suggestion that a child could be so easily conned into eating vegetables.
