About this deal

Things like eliminating the built-in flash and support for the simple to use ML-L3 remote (which I use frequently) make this an easy choice for advanced amateurs such as myself. The Sony a9 III is the world's first full-frame mirrorless camera to feature a global electronic shutter with simultaneous readout. Select the remote control mode in the shooting menu, then choose an option, including quick-response remote (where the shutter is released immediately the ML-L3 button is pressed), and delayed response (where the shutter fires 2 seconds after pressing the ML-L3 button).

Pair the WR-R10 and WR-T10 by turning on the camera, placing the two remote devices next to each other and pressing their grey pairing buttons simultaneously, until the red and green LEDs on the WR-T10 receiver flash on and off in sequence. The ML-3 is designed for cameras with a 10-pin terminal – these are mainly higher-end DSLRs, including the D810. It can itself be used either as a transmitter or a receiver, with a range up to 120m; using an additional WR-1 unit in the middle as a relay controller can double this distance. Cameras with a 10-pin connector can be set up to be a 'master' camera, so when you press the shutter button on that camera body, the remote cameras paired to it will all fire simultaneously (up to around 50m away). Pictures taken with an optional ML-L3 remote control are shot in single-frame advance mode, regardless of the option selected with the release mode dial. When the transmitter and receivers are paired on the same channel and in the same group, pressing the shutter-release button on the transmitter will simultaneously release the shutters on all the paired cameras.

We've been using a full production version of this 120 fps sports camera, to see what you gain (and, perhaps, lose). The camera will not adjust focus continuously when continuous-servo autofocus is selected; note however that regardless of the autofocus mode selected, you can focus by pressing the camera shutter-release button halfway before shooting.Remote mirror-up Press ML-L3 shutter-release button once to raise mirror, again to release shutter and take photograph. Then pair all WR-1 units to the same channel and/or group (as above) and set the transmitter to sync mode by selecting sync on the multi selector and pressing OK. The pairing complete message will be in the display and the LED will flash red and green alternately to let you know the units are paired. Use with the Nikon D40/D40X, D60, D70/ D70s, D80, D90, D5000, D5200, D3000, D3200, D600 digital SLR cameras, Nikon Coolpix P7100 and P7700 digital cameras and the Nikon 1 J1, J2, V1 and V2. Anything that isn’t as you would expect, we then make a note of and show this in the condition notes on the page.

For those same cameras, the UT-1 used with the WT-5A will also enable high-speed image transfer over wireless LAN to a computer or FTP server. It is ideal for shooting self-portraits and macro shots and can help prevent camera shake during shutter release. The WT-6 and WT-7 enable image-data transfer via high-speed wireless LAN for the D5 and D500 respectively, and both also offer HTTP server mode and FTP upload/camera control. And the great thing is that you don't need to be at a wi-fi hotspot: your camera and smart device create the connection themselves.

Think about the file size/type when you shoot images that are going to be transferred from your camera to a smart device via wi-fi – the bigger the file size, the longer it will take to travel from camera to device. The D780 doesn't have the 'Remote Control Mode (ML-L3)' option; it has a 'Setup Menu > Wireless remote (WR) options', which is grayed out. NB The letters A, B, C, D or E after the WT number indicates the number of channels available to the photographer, which varies across the world due to different regulations governing the use of wireless frequencies.
