About this deal

Deeply moving and thoughtful, Moonrise is a challenging, potent reminder that there is great injustice in the justice system and questions whether the death penalty is ever a fitting punishment. Now the date for Ed’s execution is set, Joe is determined to spend his last few weeks close by, ever hopeful that they will overturn the execution. Rather than burdening Joe with a strict narratorial voice and pages of text to put words to his complex thoughts and feelings, using free verse instead gives Joe the space to think, talk and feel normally, in fragments, through associations and with memories, and maintain a steady characterisation all the while.

I have older-version audiobook -- Dick Hill is an EXCELLENT performer, as noted below -- so this version of Moonrise works best. I’ve always loved Crossan’s books because of her simple way of telling a story in such a powerful and poetic way. Angela also has the task of attempting to find a lawyer they can afford to put across Ed's case of his innocence in a last ditch attempt to prevent him being executed. If you've ever experienced the pain of being in a horrible situation beyond your control and having to accept it and the pain of loss this will trigger you, as it did me. The characters and plot lines were a bit thin, and if you want a really compelling take on lunar survival, I would recommend “The Martian” by Andy Weir, but hard-core sci-fi readers will want to add Moonrise to their reading list.

Joe, Ed’s 17-year-old brother, makes the trek from New Jersey to Wakeling, Texas, where he visits his brother on death row before his execution. Her rival for the job is handsome and wealthy Roman Kitt, whose prose entrances her so much she avoids reading his articles. Meanwhile, back in the forest, the Clans begin to experience the effects of the humans' intrusion into their territories, including lost and poisoned prey, destruction of the forest and cats being abducted. Money is tight for Angela as Aunt Karen has moved out and she is having to pay the full rent, meaning it will take her longer to save money to travel to Kirkland. I find it interesting that there are several sub-series within the overall saga, and what appears to be a considerable timeline.

You totally felt the mood of Joe's 11th birthday when he describes his cake, candles and the meal they ate as the cake was only for dessert. The opening introduces us to Joe who is seven years old when he finds out his brother, Ed is in prison and is being charged with murder despite his protests to his brother that he didn’t do I Ten years on, Joe is the only person still standing by Ed, even the rest of his family have turned on him and he has moved closer to the prison to spend the last weeks of his brother’s life with him as his execution date has been set. I picked this up in a used bin hoping for a bit of summer fluff, so I did not bring very high expectations, but this was pretty bad. The point-of-view alternates between the characters Stormfur, who is with the questing cats, and Leafpaw, describing her experiences as the destruction of the forest begins. She doesn’t want to have both half-brothers on Moonbase at the same time, but she has no choice, and thus begins a brutal family saga that will include massive solar flares and a host of tension-building experiences. Moonrise has been translated into various foreign languages: it was released in Russian on 18 October 2005, by OLMA Media Group, [9] in Japanese on 18 March 2009, by Komine Shoten, [10] and in French on 5 March 2009, by Pocket Jeunesse. As we approach the ¼ mark in the novel, we bounce back and forth as Joe is working in Texas, fixing up an old car on the promise of getting a job with a local diner.

Everything is a steep learning curve for Joe, never having lived alone, not knowing anyone other than the waitresses at the diner and no money for entertainment even if there were things to do in Kirkland. There were so many poems that I absolutely loved and wanted to share with everyone who would listen to me. eloquent usage of language in this deeply affecting novel puts readers right at the heart of a very sensitive and timely story. There is a future of astonishing possibilities and vital technological development waiting on a lifeless world of astonishing contrasts, where sub-frigid darkness abuts the blood-boiling light -- a future threatened by greed and jealousy, insanity and murder. If you want drama and entertainment (and SELL books, of course), you may have to sprinkle on sensationalistic distortions.

Sugar-coat the pill, like children's vitamins, and hope you swallow SOME good stuff (like the hard science Bova incorporates). Joe makes a few small missteps, but he's a good, sweet kid who takes a big risk to be by his brother's side in the days leading to his brother's execution date. I haven't really gone into whether Ed is guilty or not guilty or if he is executed as planned on the 18th August in the book as mentioning those would be too spoilery. We also get some really heart-warming scenes of this family spending Ed’s final days together we really made me want to cry. As the family head back to New York there is a final goodbye between Joe and Nell which seems so trivial in comparison to what happened with Ed and it is made worse realising that this does happen in real life. I thought the topic was handled brilliantly and the importance of having conversations about issues like these really came through. The book received mostly positive comments from reviews published in Booklist and Horn Book Review, which praised the plot and cliffhanger ending.
