About this deal

find it's effective to whirl the midgie net around your head like a maniac to get rid of the midges around you then put the net on quickly (but carefully)! Scotland is not unique with its biting beasties, but the word seems to have spread far and wide, of the dreaded Scottish midge. One insect repellent that does not contain DEET and which is found for sale all over the Highlands is Smidge, and many locals will swear by it. There are often two peaks in emergence which are the worst months for midges in Scotland so these are the best times to avoid – one in late May/early June and the second in late July/early August. It is, however, unlikely you’ll be able to hold your breath for the entire length of your Scottish visit unless your travel agent has really messed with the schedule.

My husband and I are flying to Edinburgh in early June and will be staying a few days before we get our rental car and drive across the Highlands and also visit Skye (5-night road trip). We’ve been using Smidge insect repellent for about 6 years and find it to be very effective against the wee beasties. Of course, some of us will be more sensitive to their bites than others and some lucky folk won’t even get bitten at all! Legend has it that when training in the Highlands, Marines and other members of the armed forces slather it on to avoid being bitten.Midges are prevalent throughout summer and tend to be most active around dawn and dusk when the temperatures are much cooler, and the humidity high; their favourable conditions. The impact of the removal of midge larvae from soil ecosystems is also believed to be relatively small since they constitute only a very small proportion of the total soil fauna.

When we (or another mammal) are bitten by a midge, the body responds by releasing histamine at the site of the wound. After a midge has had its fill, we can be left with itchy and irritating little bumps on our skin, which can redden in colour.

However, though insect repellents containing DEET do not pose a significant danger to human health or the environment, some people can experience negative skin reactions when using such products.

Female midges feed on the blood of animals and mammals to help provide nutrients to grow their eggs. Another popular anti-midge spray is Avon Skin So Soft Original Dry Oil Body Spray (also available in a pack of 3). This “USDA Certified Organic – All Natural Mosquito Repellent” comes in a small metal tin so can easily fit in a pocket or small bag. This is because we each have a unique flavour, a combination of scents, CO2 emissions and body temperature that can be more or less appealing to a hungry midge.Coghlans's No-See-Um Headnet is a super lightweight insect head net which features mesh fine enough to protect against midges. Once midges are drawn into a midge trap, they are usually drawn into a vessel by a strong vacuum fan. To help solve the biting insect problem, we Scots have installed giant midge-swatters all over the Highlands, only afterwards finding out – d’oh – that these also kill bats that eat midges. Midges are also worse throughout the spring, summer and early autumn when the weather is humid and still. Once they’ve found a tasty bit, they can feed for a few minutes at a time, although, we’re often unaware until after they’ve finished and flown away.
