About this deal

I'm now in my late fifties, and over the decades have seen just about every television documentary about this most fascinating of all Mesoamerican societies (two of these, 'Breaking the Maya Code', and 'Cracking the Maya Code' were based on Coe's book of the same name as the former). Some scholars, such as Michael Coe and Justin Kerr, [31] have suggested that the Madrid Codex dates to after the Spanish conquest but the evidence overwhelmingly favours a pre-conquest date for the document. His other bestsellers include Time Among the Maya and Stolen Continents, chosen as a book of the year by the Independent and the Sunday Times.

The Dresden Codex ( Codex Dresdensis) is held in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek (SLUB), the state library in Dresden, Germany. It is written with verve and grace, but also with a profound respect for the Maya alive today and the scholars who came before. She is an anthropological archaeologist interested in issues of identity and other forms of symbolic representation in the archaeological record. The Maya civilisation topic offers a wealth of interesting history to explore – from impressive pyramids and cities to complex calendars and a rich cultural heritage still prevalent in Central America today. Sharer is Shoemaker Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania, and Curator of the American Section at the university's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.

If one wants to learn about the Maya from scratch, this book is the place to start-just be aware that Dr. A Study of the Religious Worldview and Ceremonial Life of the Inhabitants of Palenque and Yaxchilan (MLA).Dominican friar Bartolomé de las Casas lamented when he found out that such books were destroyed: "These books were seen by our clergy, and even I saw part of those that were burned by the monks, apparently because they thought [they] might harm the Indians in matters concerning religion, since at that time they were at the beginning of their conversion. So, for example, to avoid the humiliation of the Spanish caste system, many Mayans simply avoided it entirely in remote enclaves, thus preserving both language and culture within an oppressive regime. Despite collapse in the ninth century, Spanish invasion in the sixteenth, and recent civil wars, seven million people still speak Mayan languages and strive to uphold their resilient culture. The codex has been housed at the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, Mexico, since 2016, and is the only of the four Maya codices that still resides in the Americas. Traditionally, Zen koans—the teaching stories of Zen—are drawn from the words and teachings of ancient masters and primarily address the concerns of (male) monastic practitioners.

There is even a god of drugs, Xochipilli, the Corn Flower Prince, whose magnificent statue sits in the National Museum of Mexico draped in a variety of calming and invigorating plants and mushrooms. Featuring luminous illustrations from world-renowned artist Rima Fujita and some never-before-shared details, it’s the perfect way to explore the life of the Dalai Lama. Megan O’Neil, one of the leading art historians of the Maya, has created an essential introduction to this important civilization from deep time to the present. Before the arrival of Spanish conquistadors, the Aztecs eradicated many Mayan works and sought to depict themselves as the true rulers through a fake history and newly written texts. It’s marketed as an introduction for beginners, but it dives very quickly into some complicated matters that seem to assume a background knowledge. If you just want to learn something about the Mayan culture, religion, daily life and history then its a bit of a turn-off. It’s not intended to be quite so universal a guide to the Maya as this book, but it shows that this approach can be done when it is intended from the beginning. This particular Saturday found Vesper in her favourite place, joyfully surging through midfield with a ball at her feet. The information is there (I think) - its just that its hidden within reams of text about the academic main-players and debates about bits of archaeological evidence.
