When using a TRS cable and selecting stereo (even though you're sending a balanced mono signal on the TRS) sound will come out of the amp BUT your left and right sides will be out of polarity. It's shortcomings are that it could use more gain on the mic preamp, and more power to the audio output so it would work better with less efficient headphones. With a dedicated monitor level controller and stereo/mono switch you'll have every possible feature you can imagine to satisfy the most demanding of clients. I've always had issues with the 1/8 male end of earbuds/extensions - Either they don't fit tightly, or they are frail and wear out.
