About this deal

The chapters are short and each one has an "epilogue" which is usually interesting, sometimes pithy, or just provides something to think about. The only small complaint i have about the book is that it felt more like a compilation of short articles.

Look at him through the eyes of his closest friends, the Apostles, who lived with him, were apprenticed to him, saw him work mighty miracles and witnessed his ultimate victory over the grave! Poprzez mnogość odwołań do historii, dawnych odkryć, opowieści o marynarzach i żeglarzach, ale i o niezwykłych obserwacjach zwierząt, wnioskach z tychże obserwacji płynących - dał nam smakowity kąsek i furę tematów do rozmów i przemyśleń. This is specially true in current times when increasingly with the advent of modern technology we are losing the sense of biological senses. It also celebrates the incredibly brave and dedicated explorers who used the same technique to make the first accurate maps of the world's oceans.

And—and this is not a criticism, by the way—a whole lot of Supernavigators involves going over what we don't know (or don't know yet, anyway). It is a hymn to the almost vanished art of fixing your position by the light of the sun and stars - with the aid of a sextant - an art on which mariners relied until only a generation ago. Complete with city tours, landmarks of the civil rights trail, a visit to the Chatanooga Choo Choo, a visit to a lavish southern mansion and much more, this tour is all-singing-all-dancing.

Or the ant’s in-built mental odometer which allows it to count steps (see my review of Desert Navigator: The Journey of an Ant), the importance of smell in fish, or spiny lobsters trudging along the sea bottom in a straight line for hundreds of kilometers? Weaving interviews with leading experts on animal behaviour with the groundbreaking discoveries of Nobel-Prize winning neuroscientists, Barrie shines a light on the astounding skills of animals of every stripe. Each double page spread details one of the most epic expeditions ever undertaken, from ancient times to the present day.
